Poll: White People Don't Want College Athletes To Be Paid

If you oppose the elimination of the student athlete in favor of making them employees where the only logical conclusion is that colleges become minor league organizations that have absolutely nothing to do with, you know, college and education...you're a racist.

Poll: White People Don't Want College Athletes To Be PaidExpand

A poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News finds that a sizable majority of Americans are opposed to paying college players. Well, white Americans.

The question was phrased, "Beyond any scholarships they receive, do you support or oppose paying salaries to college athletes?," so it didn't distinguish athletes in revenue sports, or the possibility of stipends as opposed to salaries. Thirty-three percent of respondents indicated either strongly or somewhat supported it, while 64 percent either strongly or somewhat opposed it. (Of the respondents, 56 percent indicated they were college sports fans.)

The results aren't a surprise—this country was built on unpaid labor. But America, as you might expect, is not so monolithic as that. You can play around with respondents' demographics here. People who are younger, more liberal, and less religious, were more likely to support salaries for college athletes than were their older, more conservative, more religious counterparts.

The largest split came with race: White respondents opposed paying college athletes by a 73-24 margin, while non-white respondents supported salaries for college athletes, 51-46. (Hispanics also narrowly supported paying college players.)

Interestingly, there was a 47-47 split when respondents were asked if they supported allowing college athletes to form a union, again with similar demographic breakdowns.

Meanwhile, CBS/Turner's $10.8 billion TV deal means that the NCAA receives an average of $11.5 million for each and every tournament game. Just a reminder.

I'm so sick of the false arguments that these poor kids are living in their cars and can't afford to feed themselves. Bull fucking shit. They get an education, which SHOULD be enough. They books, tuition, room & board. They get food. They get tons of apparel. You're allotted "walking around cash". Why do these kids have to be millionaires while they play for their universities? Why can't it wait until they make it to the pros OR if that's not in the cards, actually use their FREE educations?

Since when are they given cash, legally? I wish they were given a stipend OR allowed to have a part-time job. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Or wasn't the last time I knew anything about it.

I believe that most of those that don't have anything--and I mean the brokest of the broke--have ways of getting money against the rules.

NCAA Approves Major Scholarship Change: Spending Money for Student Athletes

Recruiting can be a rigorous process for college coaches. With all the competition and scandals, it can almost be overwhelming at times, but the NCAA has just made major rule changes to the process.

College coaches across the country will now have a new tool in their bag when recruiting student athletes. The Division I board of directors approved the option for conferences to allow $2,000 of spending money to athletes as a part of their scholarship. This is said to more accurately cover the cost of college. In the past, college scholarships only covered tuition, room and board, books and fees.

Participation in college sports is a job in itself. Even during the off-season, most teams have daily workout sessions in order to prepare for the next season. With the workload that most college courses bring in addition to athletics, the option for employment is impractical in many cases.

While major universities may not have an issue granting the extra money, it could put the smaller schools in a recruiting bind. The perk of spending money will no doubt be a major factor when a recruit decides which college to attend.

It is highly unlikely that the NCAA will approve a “pay to play” option in the near future. They are; however, taking a step to resolve a longstanding controversial issue.

The conferences will decide whether or not to adopt the new option. While the BCS qualifying conferences will likely approve, it will be interesting to see which of the smaller conferences disapprove.

Additionally, schools will have the option to offer multi-year scholarships rather than just on an annual basis.

Ask all the kids that end their college career with $50,000 - $100,000 in student loan debt if those scholarships aren't with ALOT of money.

I didn't realize the NCAA had approved the waling around money.

With that, there is no need for the players to get paid.

My biggest beef throughout the years was the fact that a player could not even take his white girlfriend to the movies. This caused issues at bamnmer when the player decided he would sit at home and play indian with his girlfriend( he was from the slapaho tribe). So now he can take her to the movies and not get in trouble.

All is well with the world...

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

In all fairness, this wasn't only in Tuscaloosa. I had several white girlfriends in Auburn and I didn't always feel comfortable going out in public with them. Now, I don't care. I will pop a cap in somebody's ass quick.
