I will take this opportunity to once again boast that I single-handedly cheated T-Will through Great Books II.

Both of these hires are pretty outstanding and have me jacked. Especially considering the low risk factor in the titles they are given, while also giving these high potential up-and-comers a chance to learn on the job, so to speak, at Auburn.

Question: Does anyone know if there was previously an offensive and defensive analyst on the staff? I don't know the rules with how many coaches you're allowed to have, but I assume it's a fixed number. Did we have to drop anyone to fill these roles?

As long as they are not an on-field coach, you can have as many as you want. That was the ruling a few years ago

What CCTAU, I actually think it was last year that they changed the rule though.  Basically they are HS recruiting coordinators.

Quote
Bobby Bentley's Auburn opportunity the product of long friendship with Gus Malzahn

Joel A. Erickson
February 26, 2014 at 7:13 PM

AUBURN, Alabama -- The first time Gus Malzahn came calling for Bobby Bentley, the timing just wasn't right.

Bentley's son, Shuler, had one season left at Byrnes High in Duncan, S.C., and Bentley himself had just taken over again, stepping into the role for the school he took to four straight state titles earlier in the decade.

When Malzahn called Bentley back this offseason, the legendary South Carolina high school coach felt the time was right to go, and he agreed to join the staff as an offensive analyst in charge of quarterbacks.

"I want to help the program in any way I can," Bentley said. "I want to pour myself into the quarterbacks firstly. Obviously, that's my goal right now, to make that quarterback room as positive and energetic as positive I can."

Bentley and Malzahn first met at a 7-on-7 tournament in Hoover. Bentley's Byrnes team and Malzahn's Springdale teams were staying in the same hotel, and the two offensive innovators hit it off right away.

Then, after Malzahn became the offensive coordinator at Tulsa, Bentley spent some more time with him, and the two talked about eventually working together.

Bentley had been a high school coach since he was 25. When he took the head coaching job at Presbyterian College in 2007, Bentley learned quickly what Malzahn first learned as a coordinator.

A lot more than X's and O's ability is required to be successful at the collegiate level. Bentley was surprised by everything else: the media, administrative qualities, recruiting and the logistics that goes along with it.

"In general, the college game is very similar to the high school football game from an 11-on-11 standpoint," Bentley, who was 10-13 in two years at Presbyterian, said. "I learned that there's a lot of things behind the scenes that need to be done. ... I really learned a lot from that experience."

But even after returning to the high school ranks, Bentley always wanted to pursue his dream of becoming an offensive coordinator.

Malzahn understands that dream better than most.

"I think it's very important, the fact that I've been a high school coach and I got this opportunity, to try to give other people more opportunities," Malzahn said.

Working with Malzahn puts the 45-year-old on that path, and even though some observers immediately noted that Bentley's son, Jake, a 2017 prospect, already has an offer from Auburn, it's worth noting that the offer came last summer, after Malzahn had already tried to hire Bentley once and before his son played a down of high school football.

"It truly has no factor," Bentley said. "It's great that Coach Malzahn and Coach Lashlee saw my son in 7-on-7 this summer, and that offer was out there, but it's my position with Auburn have nothing to do with that situation, other than it's a conversational piece."

Beyond his work with the quarterbacks, Bentley is excited to join an Auburn staff with plenty of experience, learning from a coaching staff that has decades of experience in the SEC.

Back when Bentley first met Malzahn, the two both bonded over their Christian faith, a driving force for many members of Auburn's staff.

Bentley still wants to be an offensive coordinator at some point, and he's looking forward to soaking up information in meetings so he can someday make the same jump that five off-the-field staff members made this season.

One, former Spain Park coach Chip Lindsey, was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern Miss.

"Iron sharpens iron, from a Biblical standpoint," Bentley said. "I know I'm going to become a better man from the people in the room. ... I really and truly believe that this is God's plan."

This one,

son Jake Bentley projects to be one of the top quarterback and overall prospects in the Class of 2017. The 6-foot-4 prospect already holds an Auburn offer.

...and he's transferring to Opelika, instead of Auburn High (to much uat pull at AUHS. I know, I know, shocking that uat has pull in Auburn's backyard, but in reality, the entire State is uat's property from the Governor on down).

That is very telling right there. If AHS does not get the hint now, I'm not sure they will.

What exactly is the conspiracy theory here?

I get it that kids suspected of being "plants", i.e. silent Bama commits who publicly commit to Auburn, transfer there as an extra Fuck You to Auburn. But what exactly is there to support a theory that the AHS faculty are actually secret bammers orchestrating this?

Again, going back to the Rayshawn Evans situation, I had no problem with the kid going to Bama.  Take the conspiracy theories out of the equation and it's not some big surprise that a 5* LB would choose to play for Lord Saybinz.  Plus, a lot of guys like the idea of getting away from home.  Obviously, it was the circus his scumbag daddy put on that pissed everyone off.
