Peyton has never once put his team on his shoulders and carried them to a win in a critical game the way the true greats have.

More often than not, unfortunately for his legacy, Peyton (and his team) chokes on big stages.
It's mostly about his teams.

Sorry brother disagree.

40 fourth quarter comebacks, 51 game-winning drives

He leads over all QBs in both these stats. (edit Tied with Marino for 51 GWD)

Peyton leads in almost every statistical category in the NFL dude is a legend whether he wins this Superbowl or not.  Ask Marino about his Superbowl rings.

How many of those games mattered?

Until he finally got to the Super Bowl a few years ago he was known as a choke artist.

That's what sticks with me.

Ok so Super Bowl rings do matter than?   Because a few threads back you dismissed someone else's choices because they had a bunch of Super Bowl rings but those don't matter.

I'm just trying to figure out what we are gaging legacy by.

He has more rings than Marino, who you wouldn't lump him in with.

BTW I am a huge Marino fan. Peyton is and deserves to be in the discussion of greatest ever NFL QB (at this point)

It's not just about rings or trophies, bud.

Then what is it about?   Winners Win and the rest lose. I'd take either TB or TA over DM any day.

Not gonna argue that, great supporting players, great coaching (most of his tenure). And he won games and three Super Bowls. He didn't fuck it up.

You may not like him, which many don't, but you can't argue his success.

I was always a fan of the Boys.  And I liked Dallas too.  This was the one period where they fell from grace with me.  Didn't dislike Aikman but the surrounding cast put sand in my vagina.  And I don't know if I'll ever really pull for them again until Jerry Jones is out of the picture.

I'll try harder.

They were cocky but it was a time when they were winning and nobody around here gave two shits what they did as long as they were winning. (See turd town) Jimmy Johnson left and the house of cards started to crumble and folks were getting pissed.

Jimmy Johnson had as much to do with anybody who won rings as they did. Barry came in and fell deep into the most talented team of the time and did his best to fuck it up and still won.

Jerry Jones is a cancer on and for the team. As long as he holds owner/general manager I would love to see them go 0/16 every year.

I'm kind of partial to the likes of Elway, Marino, Montana, etc. Also, I have never been a Peyton Manning fan really I guess because of his days with the Vols. However, the guy belongs in the "greats" catagory because, like said, he is one of the ultimate students of the game and it shows at game time. Got to give credit where credit is due.

Peyton Manning IS the reason that the Broncos are where they are right now.

Most assuredly. No better than any borderline qualifier without him. Couldn't make it with Russell Wilson.

I don't know.  The eye test I guess.

Super Bowl rings matter to an extent, but so does choking when it matters.  Before this season he was 9-11 in playoff games.  He'd thrown for 32 TDs but also had 21 picks in the playoffs.

He could have sent Ray Lewis out last year with a big fat L on his murdering resume, but he choked and threw a Tony Romo pick deep in Raven territory that killed a drive and let Baltimore come back and win.

He's just never done that much for me.  Always seemed like a regular season guy who pffftt'ed at critical times.

You've got people like Big Papi -- love Big Papi -- who turn it on in the post-season. I don't care what he does in the regular season, I want him in the lineup when the playoffs begin. And then there are guys like Andruw Jones who tear it up during the season but fade in the playoffs.  Jones was something like 1-17 in the 2003 playoffs for Atlanta.

Peyton's always been that to me.  A good regular season guy, but not the player I want when my team is in the playoffs.  Regular season stats are great.  But how do you play when marbles are at stake?

Give me warriors like Favre and Montana.  Heck, even Drunken Stabler, Goofy Bradshaw or Steve Young.

I'm sure Peyton will get in the HoF.  I'll yawn when it happens.  Don't misunderstand, I like the guy.  Had the chance to talk to him after the Vols beat the Turds at Legion and he led the band.  Nice guy. Came away impressed.  But greatest of all time?   There's a big line ahead of him IMO.  Not sure he can see the front from where he stands.

Marino, Montana, Elway, Manning, Aikman, Starr, Baugh, Unitas, Staubach, Young, Farve, Brady...

These are the Elite HOF QBs, IMO. Marino is my favorite among all of them.
