The love of country music has become a signifier ever bit as much as hardcore rap. Defenders of country will pounce on that characterization, claiming that country is the music of “real Americans” and tells “real stories” about people living “real lives.” In fact, modern country music is the phoniest music in the world.

I liked the country greats but very little if any of the stuff out now.

I listen to most all genres but I don't feel any need to invest much beyond an artist's initial couple of albums that get them to the point of no return... after that I've all but heard enough to know if their material has run its course save for the way it's marketed and repackaged as something different.
It's all been done as Van Morrison states difinitively when interviewed. Today people flock to his concerts hoping to recoup some of their past and the drunken bastard grunts out sounds to a mixture of country, jazz, R&B and soul. And I'm fairly sure the fucker despises performing as much as the public that buys his music. Hard to argue his talent and longevity in the music business though.

I did like the western sound of The White Buffalo that was recently posted, Mumford and Sons too and I found myself amused with Big Bad Voodoo Doll's Christmas tunes. Mostly I just knock around looking for something a little different and have no real favorites.

I for one love country music, but the shit I hear on the radio now days is not country music.  It should be labeled Southern Pop.   It's nothing more than pop with some fiddle or steel guitar and instead of talking about going out in the clubs taking shots and doing things to a females body, you get some dude singing about having a bottle of shine up under the seat of his big black jacked up truck, rollin' on 35's. 

Some of the dumbest lyrics that I have ever heard in recent years have came from Southern Pop.  Real country music is hard to come by and not mainstream anymore. 

Decide which ones sounds more like Pop than Country:

Mrs.AUT1 has told me that she thought him to be cute, but his songs suck.  This coming from the woman who loves her some Pop music.  She has been off that genre of music for a few years now and I think "If I could have a beer with Jesus" pushed her off the edge.  Refuses to turn it on the radio now days.

Actually, when they go full tard and have like a guest rapper or something, completely devoid of fucks about making it resemble country at all, those are strangely tolerable to me. That Cruise song, on paper seems like it should annoy the ever loving fuck out of me. Strangely, I don't really hate it. Same with that Jason Aldean song featuring Ludacris. It's a long long way from Johnny Cash or The Foggy Mountain Boys or anything in between, but for some reason I tolerate it for the disposable mindless pop that it is. At least it's different and somewhat original.

The other shit that is today's cookie-cutter country-song-by-numbers that is 99.9% of the shit that gets played on any country station on the other hand? No use for it whatsoever.
