Quarters vs. semesters

Quarters vs. semesters
« on: August 12, 2008, 02:00:47 PM »
I noticed that school starts on Monday on the Plains...quarters generally started in late September (my last year at AU, the first day of classes was September 27).

Was anyone here a student at Auburn when the transition from quarters to semesters was made?  Having taken college classes in both, I liked that you could take many different electives in the quarter system, but semesters were definitely less stressful...quarters were like a 9.5/10 week sprint.

August 18 just seems really early for a college fall semester to start...our high schools here don't start until the 25th.

I was there for the transition, I believe.  I loved quarters:  when you left for spring break, you didn't have a class hanging over your head.

On the off-chance that the fairy tales ain't bunk
And Imma keep a bottle of that funk
To get motel parking lot, balcony crunk.

Public schools have already started in Alabama.  Im in Law School and we start on the 18th.  Its not too far off.  Spaces everything out and gives you some breathing room during football season.  I loved it.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "Guys don't mind hitting Michael Vick in the open field, but when you see Cam, you have to think about how you're going to tackle him. He's like a big tight end coming at you."

That was probably my absolute favorite thing about winter quarter...well, that and spring break was actually close to 2 weeks long (it was at least 7-8 school days).

I also liked making the trip up for games before school started...drive up Friday with a bunch of furniture/other heavy stuff, party all weekend, drive back home on Sunday afternoon.  When it was time to actually report to school, all I had to take up was clothes.

Trivial point, but it's much better going to games when all the students are there and the AU band is playing.  Not a 3/4 full stadium, much of which is comprised of a bunch of high school bands.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

School in the da ATL skarted yesterday.

I was there for the transition.  It happened before the Fall of 1999 (+ or - 1 year).  Semesters are better...if I remember correctly, you take less classes so it seems like a less of a load.  Your holidays do get screwed a bit and there's less room for electives (that golf "class" I took was the best... 2 credits to play 18 every week) but I feel it's academically more sound.  And,
