A Little Statistical Update

A bit past the half way point.  Thought I'd take a quick look at where we be...who be doin' what....

Auburn is 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. 

The Offense is averaging 36 ppg.

494 Total Yards per game with 300 yards coming on the ground and 194 through the air.

Individual Rushing Totals:

Tre Mason:  119 Carries for 693 yds.  5.8 YPC  99 Yards/Game

Cameron Artimus Pyle:  59 Carries for 417 yds.  7.1 YPC  60 Yards/Game

Nick Marshall:  75 Carries for 388 yds.

Corey Grant:  38 Carries for 376 yds.  9.9 YPC

Individual Pass Catcher Totals:

Sammie "Get Off Me Bitch" Coates:  18 catches for 423 yards and 2 TDs  23.5 yards per catch

Ricardo "Hands of Stone" Louis:  16 catches for 138 yards and 1 TD  (He will be da' man before it's over)

Quan Bray:  15 catches for 166 yards and he lit the lamp 3 times.

Marcus "Clutch" Davis:  15 catches for 132 yards and 1 End Zone Dance

Trovon "Wait Til Next Year" Reeeeeed:  6 catches for 51 yards.


Of note.  The D is yielding 22 ppg but already has 9 interceptions this year.  I believe we either had one or no interceptions at all last year.

Snags, what this says to me is last year's abortion was exactly that. Give the right coach the tools he wants - even just some of them - and he can make a machine out of it.

Bammers like to always bring up Gus at Arkansas as if that was some abject failure (go look it up, DMC5 and FleaJones ran like cray but all everyone remembers is the QB issues). The dude has put up da points in every spot except when  decided he needed to call plays and make Gus "protect the defense."

I am glad those days seem to be in the rearview.

That said, I don't think we run the table the rest of the way. We've beaten one team we weren't supposed to. Something tells me we will probably drop on of the next two SEC games to teams we are supposed to beat. I think we do Georgia and they run Richtshad.

Bama - not ready to call it yet but those motherfuckers know hell is waiting on them in Jordan-Hare.

Bama is a 28 point favorite and I think they will win.  I am putting money though that they don't cover the spread and wouldn't be surprised to see UT in the game going into the 4th.

Agreed 97.4%.  Don't like going on the road to Arky and UT.  Granted, the Hawgs have just plain looked like road kill lately.  UT is the team that seems to find a way to stay in every game.  I know we can hang 35+ on Georgia the way our offense is coming around and the fact that their D is just plain shitty. 

Bama?  The positive is I think Malzahn knows how to attack their defense.  I can see us putting some points on the board.  How many, though?  Bama gave up 42 to The Fighting Johnny Fucking Footballz. I completely agree that outside of Ole Miss, they really haven't played a quality offensive team.  But....throw out the one game against JFF, who can hang 40+ on anyone in the nation, and their D is giving up 4 points a game.  Pretty damn stout no matter who you're playing. 

Still, I don't know how much we'll really know about their D since the only quality team they play between now and the Iron Bowl, is LSU.  And they're not exactly an offensive juggernaut.

Tenn is starting to worry the shit out of me. They're unpredictable. And I think Jones is a good coach. His players are starting to buy into his system. Seriously that game scares me. More than the others.

Mason's runs reflective of Auburn's season

Coming out of high school, Auburn running back Tre Mason was listed at 5-foot-9 and 185-pounds.

He was a special talent, but there were questions about his durability and whether or not he could carry the load at the next level.

From Recruiting Nation's scouting report, “While shifty and difficult to tackle as a high school back, we question his durability if asked to run consistently between the tackles and how much yards-after-contact production he can earn at the major college level.”

After Saturday’s performance against Texas A&M, there are few, if any, who still doubt Mason’s durability. The junior carried the ball 27 times for 178 yards and a touchdown as Auburn knocked off the then-No. 7 Aggies on the road.

“He’s a tough guy, an extremely tough guy,” head coach Gus Malzahn said after the game. “He was a little banged up coming into the game, and he really rose to the occasion.”

There were two runs in particular that were indicative of Mason's day and how far he’s come.

In the second quarter, Auburn faced a 4th-and-1 from inside the Texas A&M 5-yard line. The Tigers already trailed 14-10, and although they knew they had to get points, they didn’t want to settle for a field goal with Johnny Manziel on the opposite sideline. The coaches decided to give the ball to Mason.

“The game was one the line, and we needed to score every time we touch the ball,” Mason said. “It was 4th-and-1, and those are the things that I have to do. As an impact player, I have to be the one to make a play.

“We needed that yard, and I did all I could to get that yard. I followed my fullback. I ran behind my line. They did their job, so I had to do mine and I got that extra yardage.”

Mason picked up that yard and a couple more to set up Auburn with a 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The Tigers scored three plays later and took back the lead.

“That was a great run,” Malzahn said. “He ran over two of their guys and Jay Prosch, I think he ran over him, too. That was an impressive run. There’s a lot of backs [who] wouldn’t have got that.”

The second run came in the fourth quarter with Auburn trailing 41-38. The Tigers had driven down to the 5-yard line again thanks in large part to Mason, who had already gained 31 yards on the drive. The coaches handed him the ball one more time, and he responded with a 5-yard touchdown run, reaching the ball across for the final yard.

“A lot of people say don’t leave those guys too much time on the clock,” Mason said. “From an offensive standpoint, we didn’t want to take a chance of either getting a penalty or them stopping us. I kind of used Reese Dismukes as a bridge, rolled over the top of him and stuck the ball out for a touchdown. It all worked out well.”

The defense did its part, and the run ended up being the game-winning touchdown.

Mason had plenty of good runs against Texas A&M, but it was those two that really epitomized his day and really his season as a whole. He’s no longer thought of as a running back who can’t run in between the tackles or who can’t pick up yards after contact. He’s completely changed his M.O. from high school.

“I was always looked at as underrated or an underdog,” he said. “I’m just trying to prove to everyone that maybe I’m not what they expected. I don’t want to be an underdog anymore.”

The same can be said for Auburn. The Tigers are 6-1, but it took the victory over Texas A&M for people to take them seriously. Now they’re ranked No. 11 in the BCS standings and a legitimate threat to Alabama in the SEC West. They’re no longer an underdog either.

“Our goal is the national championship,” Mason said. “It’s a team goal. And it’s not going to change. We feel like we’ve been getting better every week. We’re just going forward and trying to get better every week. Who knows how far we go?”

3 RBs averaging 5.8+ ypc?  Motherfuck.

Marshall is actually netting 5.2 ypc.  He has 449 on 75 carries but they (AuburnTigers.com) showed losses of 61 for a net of 388.  Which brings up a statistical point that has never made sense to me.  If a QB takes a snap in the shotgun and immediately takes off running....and gets  dropped 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage, the defender gets credit for a tackle for loss.  If he takes the snap and drops back to pass and gets tackled for a 4 yard loss, the defender gets credit for a sack...but the QB gets a net loss off his rushing total. Since you're calling it a passing play, would it not make more sense to take 4 yards off the QB's passing total?

But then, if he scrambles and gets away for a 10 yard gain, it suddenly becomes a rush and....wait...damn, I'm confusing myself

The reasons it worries me more is because it's one that we should win, it's in their house and they are beginning to believe that they can win too. Other than that, I had already prepared meself for two losses to end the regular season.

But now, I'm not expecting two losses to end the season. I'm expecting one win and fingers crossed for another. The 2nd half of LSU and the TAMU game done went and growed my expectation parameters.

A little fun factoid.  Auburn has outscored opponents 57-23 in the 4th quarter this year.  They've given up a total of 533 yards in the 4th.  It's not exactly shut down defense, but it does show this team is either making the right adjustments, or they're a lot fresher than their opponent by then.  Probably a little of both given that AU has been rotating guys on the D-Line like I've never seen an Auburn team do.  And against teams like Texas A&M and Ole Miss, who run a fast paced offense and are more pass oriented, they've been using a lot more sets with defensive ends across the front.  I saw one play against A&M where they had Ford, Nosa, Daniels and Owens as the front 4.
