Thoughts - Week No Auburn Game

Thoughts - Week No Auburn Game
« on: September 29, 2013, 05:28:15 PM »
- Alabama is boring.  A few weeks ago I made the point that with the DJ Fluker allegations that we knew that Alabama was buying and taking care of the best players.  A booster acting as a go between between an agent and a player providing extra benefits.  Classic case.  Should be penalties and an investigations, but there won't be.

And because of that, they're tainted.  To me, Alabama will never have any respect from me again.  I used to say, "Yeah, they may, might, maybe be cheating, but I respect that Saban is a great coach and that they have great players."

That respect is gone.  They can drown in a well for all I care.

But away from that tangent, their buying players is ruining the game.  They do NOT have a good team.  This is the worst Alabama team since 2007, and even that one had a bit more gall to it than this one.

Alabama is riddled with penalties.  Their offensive line is putrid.  They're inconsistent.  Their defense has had trouble all year playing pass defense.  They are undisciplined.  They seem to be poorly prepared.

But with that said, on a drive in the 2nd quarter, with their starting running back on the bench, their starting center with a bum knee, and three fumbles (all on this drive), they managed to come away with 3 points.

I told a friend of mine afterwards that Alabama would hit a 75 yard breakaway run in the 2nd half and the game would be over.

And it happened.  TJ Yeldon slipped through, spun, and took it to the house.

Because that's what happens when a vastly talented team plays like shit against inferior talent.

It reminds of the story of Karsten Braasch playing a tennis match against the Williams sisters.  The Williams sisters thought they could beat a male tennis player.  Braasch, then ranked 203rd, beat both of them.  Venus 6-2 and Serena 6-1.

It was later revealed that Braasch had spent the previous night drinking and was hungover during the match.

He owned them while he was hungover.  He admitted that he didn't take the match seriously in an article in wrote, and he suspected the other sisters didn't either.  But who really believes those two girls didn't really think they would go into a match like that and win?

The point is, Ole Miss had no shot.  Even though Alabama shot themselves in the foot in the 1st half, there was no chance Ole Miss was going to win.  That's fine some years.  Sometimes recruiting goes your way and you develop such an experienced team that even when you play your worst, the other team just isn't good enough to beat you.  Like Colorado State the week before.  Or Virginia Tech in week one.  Or Alabama's defense against Texas A&M in week 3.

But after six years of it, I'm tired of it.  It's the same rerun over and over.  We have definitive proof that Alabama has broken NCAA rules, and the common consensus is that they're fine.  That nothing will come of it.  That they're the top dawg of NCAA football.

I love The Roundtable in Birmingham.  Have always respected those guys.  I've lost a lot of respect for them the past few weeks.  I listen to them daily.  They all act like, "Besides Alabama, who's in contention for the top two spots?"  "Besides Alabama, who's playing the best football right now?"

That's asinine.  Alabama's playing terrible football.  But even if the Dallas Cowboys were hungover, they'd still beat Gadsden High School by 40 points.

Is that even fun for Alabama fans?  I guess it is.  It's why so many of them are apt to break NCAA rules and pay for players.  I can't imagine that though.  That game was boring.  It was a chore to watch the whole thing, and anyone who has watched football the past six years knows that Alabama was going to pull away in the end.

The only thing that didn't happen in that game was a pick six.  I figured Bama would get one.

- LSU-Georgia was a great game.  That's why top college football teams should do when they play each other.  Classic SEC football.  Well, no defense.  But still a lot of fun.

- Arkansas-Texas A&M was about like I would have expected it to be.  Maybe I thought Arkansas would eat clock up, but they gashed A&M really well.  Take away that pick six and this game goes down to the wire with a possible Arkansas win.

- Stanford is not very good.  I watched a good bit of them against Washington State, and while they play like an SEC team, they don't have the tenacity of an SEC team.  I really think they'd get beat handedly by LSU or Georgia.

- Also, I'm going to watch Auburn games to support the orange and blue.  We're just not up to having 22 guys (plus backups) that can play SEC football.

Wisconsin had a linebacker.  #44.  He's short.  About 6'0 on a good day, but probably shorter.  I think their roster lists him at 5'11 240.  240 might be generous.

Anyway, he looks just like Jake Holland.  I mean, if you put Borland in an Auburn uniform, you'd think he's Jake Holland.

Here's some proof;

They're not that different looking.

There is a big difference though.  Borland knocked the fuck out of some Ohio State players.  He was all over the field.  Making plays.  Making tackles.  Hitting people.  Being mean.  Being what an inside linebacker should be.

I know we've beaten the Holland horse to death, but I'm not going to watch Auburn this year and expect us to win.  I'm not going to expect to see "improvement" with the Auburn defense.  I'm not going to expect to climb to any great bowl games or see us put ourselves into position to win the West.

This year is like last year expect we won't give up at the end.  It's like last year but instead of thinking we're spiraling into the toilet, I'll think we're building for the future.

We're staring at some difficult and embarrassing losses over the next few months.  ANd it's not just Jake Holland.  There are a few others that need to step their game up if they even have the ability to.

Put Jake Holland at Wisconsin and he'd be a star, too.

Different game played at a different speed.  That's proven every single time (with one exception) Ohio State ventures out of the sissy league and plays a team from the SEC.  They are exposed as being two steps slow and unable to withstand SEC size for the duration.  I think the James Joseph/Stacy Danley AU team beat them like 36-14.  And that's what's going to happen 95 times out of 100.

Jake Holland would be a beast at Wisky, Northwestern, Penn State, Minnesota, hell, even Michigan or OSU.

Sadly he plays in the SEC.

I disagree with the rest of your stuff.  I didn't see anything out of Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arkansas, A&M or even Alabama that we don't have a shot to contend with so long as we cut down on stupid turnovers and recognize what we're doing well/poorly before the half.   Halftime adjustments are great, but sometimes you need to have a Plan B in the first half before it gets away from you (21-0 LSU lead in the first half).

We may lose all those games.  But we can play defense as well as Arkansas and I think our offense is better.  Gives us a shot at the Aggies.

I think we can stop Arky's run game.  I think ours offense will move the ball on them.

I didn't see anything out of Ole Miss that scared me at all.  Hope we learn from that film.  Their QB is a joke.

Georgia will throat punch us.

Bama isn't invincible, but they have the weakest schedule of anybody I've ever seen.  Get past LSU and we're the only bar that could stop them from another SEC-CG.

We don't have the personnel to say we can stop or score on anybody.  Some have said that before the season and a few said it after the first few games.  I'm in that group now after watching other SEc teams play.  We're scrappy, yes.  We'll win some.  Not sure who though.  Only SeC team I feel confident in beating at this point is Tennessee.

I watched or attempted to watch Ole Miss-Bama and JFF-Arky at the same time while very distracted and with the benefit of high gravity ale. In sum, I didn't really watch an entire game that I could scrutinize as well as I would like. So earlier today I watched a replay of Ole Piss at Turdville,  a game that would seem impossible to revisit unless tied and tortured...but I made it through its entirety and this is what I took from it.

Alabama thoroughly beat Ole Miss in every facet of the game plain and simple. Alabama is the most complete team in the SEC but I liken them to the team Utah beat in the '09 Sugar Bowl. They are prodding but deceptively so as the game is all but overly managed to where it's truly no fun to watch.
This team is very good even with a third team center, a shakey right tackle and plenty of new faces on defense. They tackle true and cover very well without the benefit of a bigtime rusher. Saban's team plays four quarters of disciplined, economic football making nearly every move count, overcoming their own miscues while tightening the screws for a submission... which in Mississippi's case was early in the third quarter.

Alabama has a shitty schedule which might prove detrimental in November against better competition. It's quite possible a couple of teams develop into a true contender but I haven't seen that team, not yet.

Bama isn't invincible

These two statements. Truth.

Like A&M, if UGA had an avg defense they may would run the table. Plus their players, especially on D, are showboats and immature. They are their own worst enemy.

Alabama is the most complete team in the SEC
I'm a  :bamahomer: and I wouldn't even say that.

They have improved since week one.  Really, the problem on offense is the OL.  Of course, on the forums, everybody is screaming about play calling and various other things.  Guess what?  When your OL can't block a damn thing, it doesn't matter what play you run.  I hate to say it, but the line played 100% better in the second half when the backup center came in and started getting the line into the right calls.  I don't wish injury on anybody, but this may end up being a case of addition by subtraction.  It's frustrating because the rest of the offense is set at pretty much every position, save TE.

The front 7 on defense are pretty solid.  CJ Mosley will be missed next year.  The problem with the secondary is that they are trying to figure out the best combination.  Eddie Jackson may be a missing piece of the puzzle.  He played well for a true frosh.  While Moncrief isn't a superstar WR, he is legit, and has roughly 50 pounds on that kid.  Jackson owned him for a good bit of the night.  Defense is improving week by week, but the OL has been somewhat stagnant.  I wonder how much of that was the starting center fucking up calls/protections.

UGA is pretty legit, and LSU is too actually.  Murray is kind of like Manziel.  You're not going to just shut him down.  He's going to score points.  You just have to mitigate it the best you can.

Not confident we will beat anybody, but no team scares me.  I don't see sure loss anywhere but UGA.

He would be better, but if the above were 100% true he wouldn't have posted an 0'fer against Washington State and 1 solo tackle against Arky State.

I don't buy that Ole Miss didn't have a shot.  Coaching took them out of that game.   There was at least two opportunities to put points on the board and make it a 6-3 ballgame in the first quarter.  Could it have made a difference?  Sure, it changes momentum.  Would it have?  We will never know.

Ole Miss played decent D the first half.  I would much rather go into halftime being 9-6 than it be 9-0.  On a team like Alabama you take the points where you can get them, try and keep it close and make them think about it.  If Ole Miss would have taken the points instead of going for it on 4th down it would have been a one score game in the 4th.  That is called having a shot.

We will see what Stanford is made of in this 4 game stretch they have coming up.  Undefeated Washington, one loss Utah, undefeated UCLA, one loss Oregon St and undefeated Oregon.  I don't see them coming out of that stretch without a loss.  I haven't seen anything out of the top 5 teams that tells me they are invincible.  To me Oregon has looked the best out of that bunch, but then again who have they played?

UF to me looks better on O with Murray than they did with Driskel.  Pretty decent stats so far, he is mobile and throws lazers.  Another thing I noticed this week that bothers me.  Anyone watched GT on Defense?  I know the difference in competition, but how can we have been that much more talented than GT and they have a stout D and ours looked like Swiss cheese?  Ted Roof two years in a row with a solid defense?  Is that even for real?

I get that, and admit I don't much about Roof other than his time at Duke and not even that much.  I thought he was noted for having shitty D's other than his time at AU, no?

It was Chizik.  Defense sucked under Roof.  Sucked under Van Gorder.  Was stout under Tuberville.  Getting better under Ellis.

Roof has historically been a pretty good dc. His time at Au were his worst years by far as a dc. I think he may have won the Broyles award while at Gt.
