Dothan Going Big Time

So I'm running a couple of errands at lunch and come up on this huge building that seems to have popped up overnight. With the way they're doing the front, it almost looks like a Bass Pro Shop. See the sign and it's going to be a Gander Mountain. I take it this is a Bass Pro Shop look alike? Better than BPS? The same?

Don't get too excited. They are Bass Pro Shops extra-lite. They'll carry all the basic hunting/fishing gear and will carry long guns and pistols but they are pretty hit or miss with the quality of stuff you can find there. I prefer Academy to them.

Much more subtle version of Bass Pro. Kind of a combination of REI and Academy and Bass Pro - not just hunting and fishing. Teh Googlez are your friend.

Here's the thing, we've had a Dick's here for several years. (I love Dicks. Can't help myself) Academy opens a huge store within a block of Dick's. Gander Mountain is being built less than a 1/4 mile, if that from both of them. Love the options but Dothan isn't exactly Atlanta. Wonder if somebody will have to say uncle.

I googlized it briefly and just figured it was a BPS knock off. Just had never heard of one before.

I was just about to say - take a lot more than a Gander Mountain to make Dothan go big time...

Academy is more geared to sports. Gander is more geared to outdoors in general - camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. On guns, Gander blows Acandemy away. Pun intended. I like them both and for diferent reasons.

Same thing in Auburn. Dicks and Gander in Tiger town. Academy about a mile or so away up near the airport. And they all seem to get pretty good business. Gander is just bass pro shop without all the shiny bells n whistles.

Love Academy for their running/training shoes compared to Dick's. About 3X the selection and no attendant in the department that you have to axe to go find a pair for you. All the shoes are out. Been getting into golf again lately and find Dick's to have a much better department there. That's where I do want someone to be there to ask questions of and show me stuff. I was trying out a driver and the "pro" there actually gave me a lesson.

Gander Mountain is pretty "meh" if you ask me. Their gun & fishing prices are pretty high, but 3/4 of the store is usually dedicated to clothing.

Now sure I'm a little biased (much more on fishing), but Bass Pro is even worse. Gander tends to be a little more competitive in firearms prices than Bass Pro. I actually hated that the Huntsville Gander got rid of its on-site gunsmith. Gander sells used firearms.. another plus.

Bass Pro is much less on tackle hocking its own store brand shit & run of the mill stuff, and focusing more on total caricature of southern life shit. It's garbage that I can't walk in there and find a Lew's reel or night fishing lights, much less newer tackle items.. yet I can get camo headrests for a truck and fudge. WTF...

I wish they'd build a Cabela's up here, but there is decent fishing near Eufalua/George Reservoir down in Dothan. To me.. for pricing, broad spectrum of tackle available, etc.. Academy is good. I use tacklewarehouse.com and Cabelas.com a lot though if I'm actually looking for something hunting/fishing wise. To mirror another comment though, for guns? Gander>Academy (both tend to throw some competitive sales though here and there). I will say though.. ammo, Academy seems to be a smidge cheaper.
