Why, exactly? I prefer a host driven, interview light, and caller empty show.
What is it about fbomb's format that makes it the best?
I value the opinions of the host as much if it less than the average fan. They're usually media dicks who think that because they can spell they can spout twenty minutes of uninformed drivel about sports. Actually, I think this is why sports journalism is littered with cynics looking for scandals in tiny places. The hosts and journalists don't know diddly about the game but they can paint you a soap opera.
I like interviews because they're usually with people who are involved with the game or have experience in the past. Finebaum did well having Dye, Stallings, Oliver, Herbstreit, Howard, and various others on during the season.
And then the callers don't have to do anything but talk. Just bullshit about sports like I wish I could do when driving home but I doubt my friends want me calling them daily to wax philosophical about how Malzahn can turn the program around or what pieces Saban needs to replace to win another national championship. The callers can and should provide that, and being a national show, one could really get a better understanding of what other fan bases are like and what kind of expectations they have for their program.
But instead, we get Maury Pauvich. We get to hear a trashy woman named Tammy say the same damn things about Auburn being the obvious team to beat every day despit Auburns record. Oh yeah, Charles from Reeltown is the male version who used to say the same things as Tammy. Then there's Jim from Ttown who is always angry because the callers don't recognize him as the greatest caller. Then there's that Georgia fan who talked too damn fast but always made sure to impersonate the rock from WWF Monday Night Raw and would act like he was getting into fist fights with radio callers.
Finebaum controls that. He doesn't have to put those idiots on. He could talk about anything and let the callers provide insight to the conversation even if its beyond football. Look at the political talk shows. You think Rush gives a fair amount of time to his callers? Hannity? I'd rather hear what the voters are saying about topics instead of one rich voter who has an agenda. No different with sports hosts.
