He was recruited by and played for Urban Meyer.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/07/sports/ncaafootball/hernandez-among-many-arrested-at-florida-in-the-meyer-years.html?ref=sports&_r=3&

Quote
As the University of Florida dominated college football for the better half of a decade under Coach Urban Meyer, the Gators accumulated numbers — of victories and accolades and championships — at dizzying rates. In six seasons, they won 65 games, two Southeastern Conference championships and two national titles.

In recent years, though, another number has been affixed to the Meyer era. That number is 31, as in, at least 31 arrests of Florida’s football players from 2005 to 2010.

Many of the charges were typical of college campuses: under-age drinking, disorderly conduct, violations of open-container laws. But other, more serious charges included aggravated stalking, domestic violence by strangulation, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and fraudulent use of credit cards, according to criminal record databases. Most of the cases never went to trial, the charges having been dropped or pleaded down.

The unsavory underbelly of the Gators’ football dominance was recently highlighted when Aaron Hernandez, a starting tight end on the 2008 national championship team who later played for the New England Patriots, was accused by authorities of committing an execution-style murder in Massachusetts. While at Florida, Hernandez had run-ins with the police in Gainesville, who questioned him and three teammates after a 2007 shooting and recommended a felony battery charge against him after a fight at a restaurant (the case was not pursued).

The 2008 team provides a window into Florida football during that period. Tim Tebow was the star, a full-fledged phenomenon as beloved for his strong faith and motivating personality as for his on-field dominance. But a number of players on the team did not live up to Tebow’s ideal.

A roster on the university’s Web site lists 121 players, 41 of whom have been arrested, either in college or afterward, and sometimes both. That number included 16 players on that season’s final two-deep roster, nine of whom were starters, as well as a kicker, punter and returner.
Several of those players went on to the N.F.L., and one, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, later won the Heisman Trophy playing for Auburn.

After Hernandez’s arrest, Florida declined to comment. Meyer, about to start his second season as coach of Ohio State, initially declined to answer questions about Hernandez, a player who reportedly went to regular Bible study in Meyer’s home.

But Meyer’s wife, Shelley, posted on her Twitter page, “When will we start holding individuals accountable for their own decisions/actions and stop blaming any/everyone else?” She added the hashtag “liveyourliferight.”

Meyer made a similar comment in a text message that was reported Saturday by a sportswriter for The Columbus Dispatch.

“Relating or blaming these serious charges to the University of Florida, myself or our staff is wrong and irresponsible,” Meyer told the sportswriter, Tim May.

“Our staff, myself and our families worked very hard to mentor and guide him,” he said of Hernandez.

For much of Meyer’s tenure at Florida, Tebow was the focus, his personal fan base as large as any in college sports history. His presence was so overwhelming that he overshadowed his teammates and their arrest records.

But in 2009, the number of arrests was such that The Orlando Sentinel, which covers the university, decided to maintain an online database to keep track of them.

Those charged included safety Jamar Hornsby, who was accused of ringing up 70 fraudulent charges in 2008 on a credit card that belonged to a woman who died in a motorcycle crash. He had also been charged with property damage and criminal mischief a year earlier.

Ronnie Wilson, a lineman from Meyer’s initial 2005 recruiting class, punched and spat on a man, then opened his trunk, grabbed an AK-47 and opened fire outside a nightclub in April 2007, a police report charged. He was later arrested on charges of marijuana possession and of battery and assault.

Safety Dorian Munroe was charged with felony theft, accused of removing a parking boot affixed to his car. Safety Tony Joiner was charged with breaking into an impound lot to retrieve his girlfriend’s towed car. Defensive end Jermaine Cunningham was arrested after an altercation with an employee at the sandwich shop Jimmy John’s.

And Ron Jawarski says Cam is only the 18th best quarterback in the NFL because "he isn't a good passer."
Will never be a great quarterback according to Dumwadski "because he runs."  That idiot can't see the forest for the trees.  Had more completions, more attempts, more yards about the same number of sacks, an equal number of passing TDs and rushed for way more yards than their darling Griffth3. Only stat different was the number of picks.  Cam had 12 in 485, Griff 5 in 393.

3869 passing yards last season.  Higher passer rating than Luck, Cutler, Bradford, Stafford... First QB on the rushing list with 741 rushing yards. Outrushed Mark Ingram and Knowshon Moreno among many others.

4051 passing yards in 2011.  Higher passer rating than Hasselbeck, Kolb, Flacco, Dalton, Palmer, Orton...First QB on the rushing list with 706 rushing yards.

Outrushed Darren McFadden both seasons.

Does not have even an average receiving corps.  Other than Smith he has nobody to throw to.  And yet.

Screw Jawapski.

Urban's misuse of the word "myself" - multiple times - is the real crime.  Of course those guys were thugs.  Their head coach's grammar is awful.

That's what happens when thugs, like Aaron Hernandez, are protected by The Program, they think that they're above the law. Urban Meyer and Nick Sabbin are cut from the same cloth...bitch about everything, allow thugs to run the program while keeping the Police Department in check, then cut them loose from the nest.

I've come to hate "RG3".

And I hate jeworski for licking his butt. For ranking him five spots higher than cam and doing so for the very reasons he devalued cam. The redskins ran the option!!! Holy crap!!! He had so many yards rushing. Oh my god!!! The read option is so amazing!!!!

Cam would beat the grill out of his wormy head.  I'm sorry but for all the ESPN ejaculation 3 is nothing but cam-lite. I don't get the hype. He's not all that.

I don't really have a feeling one way or the other about RGIII.  Honestly, I thought he was overrated coming out of college, but he was very successful in his first year as a pro.  You saying he is "not all that" is based on your bias against him.  Why do you not care for him? because NFL folks ooze over him? that isn't really his fault.  In fact I would say the reason the ooze over him was because they got it wrong with Cam. With my O&B glasses on he is no Cam Newton, but...

NFL is about making the playoffs, they don't care about losers and they don't care about statistics.  Like it or not RGIII took his team to a playoff game in year one. He was a big part of the reason they went.   Dude had a 102.4 QB rating 3200 yards passing 20 td - 5 ints and completed 65% of his throws.  That is damn good in the NFL.  I will argue that Washington's Defense is much better then Carolina's shitty ass defense, and that is why Carolina hasn't had a better record or made the playoffs.

I love Cam, he is awesome, and I think he will continue to get better and be a great NFL QB.  However, based on RG III's first year he also looks to be a damn fine QB, with a lot of upside as well.  I don't think you could go wrong with having either one of these studs as your QB.

First of all I hate walrus-faced twits like Jobworstki saying "RGIII"  Just the nickname itself pisses me off (get off my lawn).

Second, they all essentially pooh-poohed Cam's first record breaking season by focusing on his 'attitude'  Well you know what, the dude hasn't been on anything but a winner since he was in grade school.  National champ team at Florida.  National champ team at Blinn.  National champ team at Auburn.  I'm sure he expected Carolina to follow suit and it chapped his beloved butt that the pros didn't take winning as seriously as he does.  Too many people getting paid.  I'd have sulked too if I were him.   But his aching desire to win and his frustration and disappointment at not being able to single handedly will the team to do so is somehow a bad thing.  Right.

Third, it infuriated me that Chopwadski was slobbering on RGIII's wiener because "he could run!  Spread option!!! Make teams fear his legs!!!"  when that babbling buffoon DEVALUED Cam because "he runs too much."   Newton's passing stats were not that far off his grilled-highness and he's got Steve Smith and a bunch of ironhands turtles to throw to.

I'm getting tired of hearing how marvelous this injured twerp is when he couldn't carry Cam's lunchbox.  That's all.  Getting to the playoffs is not the only measure of a QB.  Got to have a supporting cast.  The redskinned one's is better than Cam's right now.

The NFL will figure Jobslobski's boy out this year.  Cam will continue to get better, III may or he may have a significant sophomore bust (which is my personal prediction).

I get what you're saying, but I agree with Godfather.

Can't blame him for the knob drooling. He's just doing what he does, and is doing it well. From all that I've seen and read, he's a good kid and a smart kid with a good head on his shoulders. Pro sports needs more like him, if you're asking me (get off my lawn too).

Focus that anger on the dipshits that praise him while knocking Cam. Because you're right about one thing. He's Cam-light. Everything there is to love about Cam is true for Griffin too, albeit I'd argue in slightly lesser quantities. Of course, the "good, smart kid with a good head on his shoulders" image of Cam is apparently only visible through orange & blue glasses thanks to a full-scale media hit job.

But again, that's no fault of Griffin's.

Ok.  So I don't "hate" him.  I hate the attention he gets for being a lesser version of Cam.  I hate that he embraces that like he created the game of football.  Randall Cunningham pisses in his face.  And laughs.

I hate the slobbering people like Walrusowski do over him and the things he does that Cam does better and with greater ease.

Did I cry when he went down last year?  Not so much.  Cam is a superhero.  This guy is human.

Will I be surprised if his production is cut almost in half this year?  Not so much.  Will they care that Cam is still doing his thing, doing it better and getting stronger every day?  Probably not.

I think Cam has the tools to end up in the Marino, Elway, Montana, Young, Peyton conversation.  I think RGIII has the tools to end up in the Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb conversation.

And if he breaks down again....
