WASHINGTON - Solid margins among women, minorities and young voters have powered Barack Obama to a 6 percentage point lead over John McCain in the presidential race, according to a poll released Tuesday.


Obama is ahead of his Republican rival 47 percent to 41 percent, The Associated Press-Ipsos poll showed. The survey was taken after the Democratic senator from Illinois had returned from a trip to Middle Eastern and European capitals, and during a week that saw the two camps clash over which had brought race into a campaign in which Obama is striving to become the first African-American president.

McCain, the senator from Arizona, is leading by 10 points among whites and is even with Obama among men, groups with whom Republicans traditionally do well in national elections.

Obama leads by 13 points among women, by 30 points among voters up to age 34, and by 55 points among blacks, Hispanics and other minorities, the poll shows.

Independent Ralph Nader and Libertarian Bob Barr both won support from less than 5 percent of the registered voters surveyed. When people were asked who they would support if Nader and Barr were not on the ballot, Obama's lead over McCain was virtually unchanged.

The poll showed a huge Democratic advantage when voters ponder which party they would like to see control Congress next year. Democrats were favored over Republicans 53 percent to 35 percent, underscoring the mountainous disadvantage McCain and other GOP candidates are facing in the Nov. 4 voting.

The poll illustrated other ways damage has been inflicted on the Republican brand name as well.

Just 18 percent think the country is moving in the right direction, and only 31 percent approve of the job President Bush is doing. Both readings are a bit better than the record lows in the AP-Ipsos poll that both measures scored in mid-July.

Congressional approval was at 19 percent, just above last month's all-time AP-Ipsos low. Because Congress is almost always widely disliked as an institution and its members come from both parties, that reading is usually a murky measure of whether the majority party — Democrats this year — is in trouble.

The poll was conducted from July 31-Aug. 4 and involved telephone interviews with 1,002 adults, for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Included were interviews with 833 registered voters, for whom the error margin was plus or minus 3.4 points.

Of course it is but Obama's RealClearPolitics.com Average (which incorporates the poll cited in this article) still shows him with a 47.1 to 44.0 lead over McCain.  Only one poll done between 23 July and 5 Aug shows McCain ahead.  Beyond that only 3 polls of the past 30 show McCain with a lead.  Scary.  We ARE doomed!

As Ronald Reagan used to say "Trust, but verify."  I get a lot of emails like this myself (although I had not seen this one until you posted it, Thrilla).

I checked Snopes.com which is usually a great source for the veracity of emails like this one.  They do have an entry on this email and it's status is "False". 

Taxes, like the economy, cannot be truly rendered easily in relatively simple terms like this email.  When it comes to taxes I do know that generally McCain is against any new tax but once it is in place he'll defend it.  I think that he supports continuing the Bush tax cuts but if he does happen to win the election I still think he'll have a belligerent, Democrat Socialist controlled Congress to deal with which may allow only for some kind of compromise on it's continuance (meaning there will be a tax increase anyway because when RINOs compromise Democrats Socialists win.)  However, if Obama wins you can be assured that there will be a tax increase across the board (unless you're a Katrina "victim").

Anyway, Snopes.com has a lengthy rebuttal of this email which is worth reading if you want to educate yourself on this subject; be sure to read the links also:

Regarding Snopes on this tax e-mail...

Technically, Snopes is correct as The Obama hasn't directly advocated any of these tax increases as presented.  HOWEVER, his statements regarding taxes could lead you to believe taxes would change by a significant amount.  I won't go through everything right now, but he has suggested tax increases in all of the areas presented in this e-mail message. 

- He will let the "Bush tax cuts" expire resulting in the largest overnight tax increase our country has ever seen. 
- Home sales?  Well, contrary to Snopes, The Obama has suggested reducing and possibly eliminating the current exemption. 
- Capital gains?  The Obama wants an increase, but he hasn't been exactly clear on how he's going to fleece everyone.  He has mentioned that it should be higher than 15%, but he doesn't know if it should go to 20, 25 or 30%.  He has even mentioned as much as 35% in an interview.  Regarding Snopes on this topic, The Obama has said a number of things that contradict his other statements.  I wouldn't put any faith in anything this guy says right now. 
- Inheritance tax...  Snopes REALLY disappoints me.  Their explanation doesn't match The Obama's opinions on the topic.  There's something called the Unified Tax Credit that Snopes doesn't explain.  The Obama is going to permit expiry of the Unified Tax Credit, which will have an affect of permitting the government to tax all estates of any value.  I have not directly heard The Obama propose an increase to the UTC making it $3.5 million.  I've never seen a Democrat propose such a thing.
