Auburn Homer Thread - Auburn's All-Time Team Beats All Other SEC All-Time Teams

You don't even have Leroy Jordan on there.

Pat Trammel?  Shaun Alexander? Johnny Musso? Ray Perkins? Chris Samuels?

You'll never get agreement here.

Who do you take out for Jordan?

McClain?  I guess because he's the youngest of the bunch, but despite his offseason troubles of late, McClain was the pivotal leader on the 2008 and 2009 Alabama teams.  Their defense didn't miss a beat when Hightower went down.

Pat Trammell?  The guy's career statistics would be matched in half a season by current quarterbacks.

You can put Alexander in for Richardson, but Richardson was a behemoth of a running back.

Chris Samuels is on there. I don't know about the other guys.

Willie Anderson and Ed King.  Bam!!!  Didn't think about them but they definitely deserve to be on.  Anderson was a beast.

Andrews was bad ass but had the Brandon Jacobs syndrome.  He wasn't going to get the carries over James Brooks and Joe Cribbs any more than Jacobs was going to beat out Caddy and Ronnie.  Andrews proved himself when he got to the Falcons, though.  He went from fullback in college to the man in the NFL.

I have a theory that Auburn's all-timers are better than every other SEC team's all-timers.

To prove this, I'm going to need a little help starting with Auburn's best players of all time.

Only use players that dominated during college.  NFL ability can only be considered during tie-breakers, and NFL ability can only be considered if a player was drafted high based on college performance.  So for example, if we were using Michigan, they could not use Tom Brady as their best quarterback.  Further, Jim Harbaugh would be considered the better choice than Tom Brady for Michigan's all-time quarterback because Harbaugh dominated during college and was drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft based on his college performance.

What am I missing with Auburn? Who do I have wrong?  Especially with older guys whom I did not have the pleasure of watching.

QB - Cam Newton

FB - Heath Evans or Fred Beasley

Why you'll never reach consensus.

Ken Bernich would snatch off your head and make a necklace of your teeth.  He's not on here.

Greg Carr, Dr. Greg Carr, was a heck of a college player.

David King was absolutely fearless.  Pound for pound as good as any defender ever.

Neil O'Donahue at kicker isn't here. Neither is Del Greco. Byrum had his moments but those guys? And what about Duvall?

Did I mention Ken Bernich? Good god a mighty that was a tough sonofa....

Jim Pyburn.  Look that dude up some time.

Tucker Frederickson? The dude was Cam+Bo in the day.

Travis Tidwell.  Held the records for 30 years.

Ken Rice, Zeke Smith, Mike Kolen, Mike Fuller, Bob Harris, Joe Cribbs...

I love CT, but he's not all time at WR as much as I want him to be.  Not when there's Pyburn and Freddie Hyatt and Weygand and Gainous and maybe even Obomanu/Aromoshadu (merged) out there.

I don't really need a consensus.  This isn't so much about finding the Auburn all time team as it is proving that we can put together a group of 25 players that no other SEC program could beat.

The Guy That Knows Nothing of Hyperbole

My dad was at Auburn the same time Tucker Frederickson was, and he's still the benchmark that my dad compares good Auburn players to.

He was the #1 pick in the NFL Draft, like Cam, Bo, and Bruce.

Phillip Marshall wrote this about him a few years ago:

http://auburn.scout.com/2/651692.html

Quote
In 1963 and 1964, he was the best running back, the best blocking back and the best defensive back in the Southeastern Conference. He helped lead Auburn to the Orange Bowl in 1963 and led the nation’s best defense in 1964.

In 1962 and 1963, Frederickson played halfback on offense and in the secondary on defense. His blocking helped pave the way for Jimmy Sidle to become the first quarterback ever to rush for more than 1,000 yards as the Tigers went 9-1 in 1963.

SI had this in their archives:
Quote
Tucker Frederickson has, too, but he is something altogether different, if not altogether unreal.

Predicts Will Walls of the Pittsburgh Steelers: "He'd go in the first round of the NFL draft at five different positions—running back, fullback, tight end, cornerback or safety. He's the best blocker in the country, and the best safety. He can be something else as a runner with his size and speed."

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/tucker-frederickson-1.html

A consensus All American in 1964, he finished 6th in the Heisman that year.

1962    Auburn    SEC       RB    54    192    3.6    1    9    104    11.6    1    63    296    4.7    2
1963    Auburn    SEC       RB    77    311    4.0    2    5    34    6.8    1    82    345    4.2    3
1964    Auburn    SEC       RB    129    576    4.5    5    14    101    7.2    0    143    677    4.7    5

Rushing numbers seem a bit low, but he was blocking for Sidle.  Can we move him to FB on your team?

And for Center, I am partial to Shannon Roubique.  All SEC 93, 94, and 95.  And he's from Denham Springs.  How LSU let him get away, I'll never know.

As for Kicker, don't get me wrong, Wes Byrum will always have a special place in Auburn History, but I'm going to go with Scott Etheridge.  I believe in the 93 Sports Illustrated, they said that in 4 years, he never missed a PAT.

And Punter, I agree with AuownsU, Terry Daniel.

He is.

I know he was a defensive player, but I read that he dominated at guard too.

You'd take Tucker over Heath Evans or Fred Beasley?

I mean, I'm fine with it, but I want to win.  You really think he could power block someone like Derrick Thomas or Brandon Spikes?

Impossible to make that comparison.

Bill Curry played in the NFL for nine years on the offensive line.  He was 6-3 about 225 if I remember right.

John Hannah, who Alabama fans regard as the greatest offensive lineman to ever play the game, ran about 250.

Jack Lambert, regarded by people who know (not idiot bama fans) was under 220.

You take any old school guy like that and who knows if they could match up to today's better fed, more conditioned, better trained athletes.  You just have to go on what they did in their time because that's the only comparison you have.

Ken Bernich was 6-2 250 and probably pretty slow.  Against today's athlete he might just be Jake Holland for all I know.  But I watched that guy with his shredded hand tape, blood running down his face, mud all over his jersey and I know he got after it.  Would that same attitude be enough today if he got the same food, the same training, the same work?  I have to think it would.

Tried to find a clip of the guy but the only thing I could find was a Florida Football Review from 1973 and he was only in one or two of the clips.

I'm relatively sure that right now, even at 70, TF could push Derrick Thomas' shit in.
