Stoytellers, Singer/Songwriters
« on: February 24, 2013, 01:30:22 PM »
I had the privilege of seeing Harry Chapin three years running around the end of October during the '70s. His performances were of my all-time favorites. The smaller venue and acoustics of the concert hall were ideal for the personal feel and warmth that flowed from this very gifted artist. Harry would also keep you laughing between songs which made the entire evening absolutely perfect, so much so that these were the only concerts I ever attended alone.
I found this particular live version of Corey's Coming styled somewhat differently with Harry singing all-out. Hope you enjoy.

If you love both history and music, then this is your man. Al Stewart has written over 500 songs and recorded as many as 200. I saw Al perform during The Year of the Cat tour and it was easilly one of my favorite concerts. I chose The Palace of Versailles because Dave Nachmanoff plays lead in this acoustic rendition of the song.

To each his own.

Watching somebody sit on a stool and sing is not entertaining to me and hardly worth the price of a concert ticket.  If they're just going to sit there I'd rather listen to the CD and not have to think about what they actually look like.

Concerts should be entertainment.  Things should blow up.  There should be fireworks, flames and confetti.  People should dance with snakes, throw things into the audience.  It should be an experience.

I once saw some relative of Harry Chapin (for all I know, might have been him) open for somebody.  He sat on a stool with a guitar and sang for 45 minutes.  I wanted to shoot him dead.

I was terribly disappointed with the Eagles reunion tour way back when because all they did was sit on stage and sing.  And they played Hotel California early in the set, like within the first five songs.

Not saying every band has to be KISS or Crue or even Pink, Katy Perry or Brittney but if I'm going to pay 60 and up for a seat at their show, I want them off their seats and doing something interesting.

I like concerts for the MUSIC. The entertainment piece for me comes from hearing impromptu versions of the different songs or jams that will never be played again. That what makes a good concert for me.

I will agree that if someone just sits and plays the music exactly as they did in the studio, then the concert sucks. No point at all in it. A concert needs to be different from the studio for the most part.

I care nothing about fireworks or fire or blood drinking at a concert. That shit is for the state fair and circus.

I'm old school. I don't mind the antics but just so happens that the kind of folks I like don't do much of the running and jumping around, prob because they would either throw their back out or shart.

I don't think this type of composition and subject matter require much in the way of theatrics. Both Chapin and Stewart wrote rather lengthy tunes that didn't receive much air time. The thread was geared toward storytelling which is where they excelled. I saw the Eagles, Kiss. Zeppelin, Seger and ZZ Top among others, but in no way do I throw them all in the same category as musicians any more than I would a group of athletes from different sports with much different skill sets such as the thread in WDE containing Bo v. Ali or Earnhardt, Jordan, Gretsky et al.

What do you guys think about hot dogs vs. bananas?

I like them both because they're phallic.
