Auburn hires Carver-Columbus coach Dell McGee in off-the-field position

AUBURN, Alabama -- First-year head coach Gus Malzahn has landed another high school coach to take over an off-the-field position on his staff.

Dell McGee, who has coached Carver-Columbus for the past eight years, confirmed that he has accepted a position on Malzahn's staff, although he declined to give the details.

"That's all I can say right now," McGee said. "I'm grateful for Coach Malzahn, grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach at Carver."

McGee, who played cornerback at Auburn in the 90's, briefly spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and coached current Tigers defensive tackle Gabe Wright, has already told his team about the opportunity.

In eight seasons, McGee was 88-19 and directed Carver to the 2007 Georgia AAA state championship.

McGee joins Spain Park's Chip Lindsey, another high school coach who confirmed he has accepted a position on Malzahn's support staff.

"It's always been an aspiration of mine to to coach at the college level," McGee said. "I'm happy as can be, very excited about the opportunity."

B.C. Rain football coach Brent Dearmon has accepted an off-the-field position on Gus Malzahn's staff at Auburn, AL.com has learned.

Dearmon is the second Mobile-area coach to leave for an off-the-field college job this month. Former Vigor coach Kerry Stevenson accepted a job on Nick Saban's staff at Alabama as Director of Player Development.

Dearmon, 28, was 5-15 in two years at B.C. Rain.

Prior to his arrival at Rain, Dearmon served as Stevenson's offensive coordinator at Vigor for three years. He also played for the Wolves, graduating in 2003.

"I'm just excited just to get into the college atmosphere," Dearmon told AuburnUndercover.com. "I want to thank B.C. Rain for giving me the opportunity the last two years of being there I'm just looking forward to working with Auburn University."

Dearmon is the third high school coach to be recently hired in an off-the-field role for Auburn's staff, joining Spain Park's Chip Lindsey and Carver-Columbus (Ga.) coach Dell McGee.

So who are we recruiting from B.C. Rain & Carver-Columbus?

I met Dell in Woodstock, GA at a Ruby Tuesday many years ago. I think he was in town for a sick relative. Great guy. Fun to talk to. I think he was at USM at the time. But said he was eventually looking to get back to AU. Kudos to him. He has done a great job at a school that could easily fall apart at the seams. Great talent there, but a lot of opportunity for the kids to get in trouble also. I'm sure he will be missed there.

First Chip Lindsey from the Birmingham area (who also used to be on Troy's staff, so has established relationships with HS coaches throughout the state, and also used to coach in the Atlanta Area), and now these two.  One from West GA/East AL area, and one from Mobile.  Hmmmm, wonder what they may be doing?  Maybe hiring guys that are well known and liked in areas of the state that produce lots of players?  Maybe see one hired from Huntsville, and even near Tuscalooser too soon?  Maybe one or two out of Atlanta, and/or Florida?  These hires by bammer and Auburn are due to the new rules allowing more off the field coaches by the NCAA as I understand it.  Essentially guys who can focus on nothing but recruiting, even during the season.  Just my guess though.

I don't know this for certain, but I think Bama has been doing this with a shadow staff since soon after Saban's arrival. The new rules may allow for more of it but the way that I understand it, they have utilized more off the field coaches than most of us and we are catching up with these hires. Maybe someone can clarify.

I'm curious what kind of effect this will have on high school football programs in the state.  Quite a few good head coaches running good programs are gone.

Lindsey had only been at Spain Park for about 3 seasons.  I think the other 2 are longer tenured.  On the whole, that's just 3 coaches, and maybe a couple more when it's said and done.  Makes room for a new guy to move up and see if he can make it work, or maybe create an opening for a guy that needs a change of scenery.

Coach Malzahn will probably bring in a few more coaches for the auxiliary coaching staff, I'm guessing one from a Florida HS, one from a Mississippi HS and maybe one from a Louisiana HS or Tennessee HS.

Virginia, South Carolina and Louisiana are supposed to be loaded for 2014 recruiting...touted as the year of the CB.
