Cam Will Surpass Bo

Cam Will Surpass Bo
« on: February 08, 2013, 01:30:12 PM »
In twenty years, Cam Newton will be considered the #1 representative of Auburn University and Bo Jackson will be an afterthought.  While many will still admire and revere Bo for his legendary skills and ambassadorship, the majority of Auburn fans will see Cam as the embodiment of Auburn University.

Agree or disagree?

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Don't know, don't care.

But lots of Auburn students and fans are going to have stories to tell about the legend of Cam Newton.

Look at that kid in the red hoodie.  Tomorrow, he's going to call his old high school buddy and say, "I saw Cam Newton score twenty points in a pick up game of basketball, and he dunked it five times."  That high school buddy will spread the story around.

Not only did Cam Newton give Auburn its best season ever, he came back to school to earn his degree, support other sports as a student, and participate in pick up games at the rec center.

The Auburn youth won't even care about Bo Jackson.

Something like that is very generational. So yea, in twenty years when the folks who were students during Cam will remember him more so than Bo.

Side note: In twenty years I prolly won’t remember any of them.

Unfortunately, many Auburn youth only recognize Bo as #34 in an old picture anyway.  It's all generational, because my pops still thinks Pat Sullivan was and still is the best ambassador for the school.
I still say it's Bo.

Agree that it will be generational. Anybody 21 years old and younger now will always hold Cam highest. People between the ages of 22-60 will think Bo. 60+ will probably always think of Pat.

imo anyway. The years are probably off by a bit but you get the gist of it.

I was gonna say the same thing and I'm 30.

The cutoff age is higher than 21 for sure. Probably more like 40.

I was a baby when Bo was doing his thing. Remember the "Bo Knows" Nike campaigns and stuff from the late 80's, but really only associated him with Auburn because my dad told me he went there as a trivial aside.

I was in fucking Glendale, AZ on the culmination of my Auburn fanhood thanks to Cam.

Honestly, after 2010, I thought Cam would just go down as one of our greatest players.  Even though I wasn't around for Bo, I still respected him as the face of Auburn sports.

Then Cam continued to support Auburn and continued to excel on the football field.  And now he's willfully coming back to Auburn - not Blinn, not Florida - to earn his degree and he's gung-ho about Auburn seemingly exactly like I was when I was a student.

I don't think anyone who has their statue outside JHS will be an afterthought but I don't disagree that Cam will be held as high or maybe higher. It's more of a "what have you done for me lately?" thing than it is about what they accomplished on the field.

It's def a generational thing too. How many AU students or fans that are younger than 35 know who Pat Sullivan is? Maybe half, is my guess. The only reason I truly appreciate him is because I've heard the stories, read about him and he coached while I was in Auburn.

No doubt age is a factor in how you do or don't remember any of these guys.  I was a little kid when I sat in Cliff Hare Stadium watching Pat Sullivan throw bomb after bomb to Terry Beasley.  A thing of beauty I still remember today.  I was at Auburn when Bo was there.  (Actually had him in some classes...he did show up the first day)  The hype around Bo was every bit as wild as it was for Cam.  Still the only player I've ever watched where you held your breath every time he touched the ball because there was a good chance something AUsome was about to happen.  If Auburn had a 3rd and 8, the obvious call was a toss sweep to Bo, because all he had to do was get his shoulders squared around the corner and it was over.

Cam...what do you say?  The legend just grew with each and every game.  He was far far more than just an incredible talent.  He was one of the greatest leaders to ever set foot on a college field.  That leadership may not have translated completely into the NFL just yet, but as for his time at Auburn....we'll never see another like him.

Very lucky to have seen all three play.

Pat was my first football hero, bigger than life to a kid.
Although in the Army was lucky enough to be at Ft. Benning during Bo's time and have season tickets. At that time nobody was bigger and faster than Bo.
Cam-Lucky to be able to watch him for four games in Jordan-Hare with the LSU game being my best memory.

Hopefully there are more on the horizons.
