People are voyeurs
« on: December 18, 2012, 12:04:31 PM »
This from a news story about the funeral of one the the children in CT, which is in and of itself sensationalist.  Of course they are going to bury their kids.  Don't know that I need to read a story about it. (And I didn't read it on purpose, it popped up in my news feed...)

Quote
Margarita Rosniak and her 10-year-old daughter, Charlotte, watched from the sidewalk as people entered the church. They had traveled from California for a Christmas vacation in New York and came to Newtown to join the residents in their grief.

This woman takes the cake.  I can't help but wonder in my cynical world view if she (a) genuinely wanted to show support to the family (although I am not sure how much support I would derive from seeing a random stranger standing on the sidewalk) or (b) she just wanted to gawk at these poor grieving parents and then be able to go home and tell everyone what an awesome person she is because she drove all the way to CT just to be there, and OMG those poor people...  Plus, BONUS!  She even got interviewed by a newspaper reporter!!  People want that connection to a big news story, even a tragedy like this, like buying an "I was there!!" tshirt.

I nearly attacked a lookie loo one time after I stopped and rendered aid at a horrific accident where a woman was killed in a car accident with her three children in the backseat.  I stayed with the little 3 y/o boy who was crying for his mommy while she literally lay dead at his feet from a broken neck.  He was the least injured, so the paramedics came for him last - but needless to say, I was traumatized. As I shakily walked back towards my car, this fucking lookie loo bystander woman on a cellphone rushed over to me and accosted me, wanting to know all the gory details.  That is the closest I have ever come to causing serious physical harm to another human being.  I told her to fuck off and nearly ran her over as I drove off.  I HATE people like that.

So when I see things like this article, the cynic in me rears its ugly head.  Show support if you must by sending a donation, or a personal note to the families.  But don't try and insert yourself into the story for some selfish need to "be there".  Guarantee she will tell that story for weeks "Oh, yeah, Marge, I drove down there to that little boy's funeral.  You should have seen it... I told that reporter..."

 Off :soap:

TL:DR?  Stupid people make me sick.

Back in the day we called "narcissist".

Layng has seen reporters sometimes poorly cover this very emotional story.

"We are the watchdogs," she insists.  "It's our job to go out and cover the story, tell people what's going on, but at the same time, we can push the envelope a little into that and start to become almost voyeurs."

You and me both. For some reason, I thought it was going to about voyeurism.

However, in an unrelated story.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.
