Tonight, AU represents the SEC in the SEC/Big East Challenge against Depaul.  For those who care, and I care (It says so on the sign), it will be on tonight on ESPNU.  Don't know squat about Depaul.  I just know we've sucked so far.  As in Lebo's worst years suckage.  On paper, this is a fairly talented team with enough upper classmen to be very competitive.  But they can't score.  It took 3 overtimes to get into the 70's against an 0-5 Rhode Island team.  And they still lost.

I guess the "good" news is the schedule after tonight for the next 4-5 games is extremely crappy until they face Illinois.  If they're going to get it together, it will have to start then.  If not...we may go beyond Lebo bad this year.

Okay...the positive waves.  The Dukies are 7-0 and have wins over 3 top 5 teams, plus wins over VCU and Minnesota.  Getting surprising play from some newcomers and finally getting some real production out of one of the 12 Plumlee brothers.

Tarheel, not  :poke: here.  Really asking.  What do you see in the Heels this year?  Watched a good bit of the Butler game and thought they just got down early and couldn't recover against a pretty good team.  I didn't do more than keep switching back to the Indiana game and it kept getting worse and worse.  On the other hand, they've pretty much bitch slapped the rest of their schedule.  Young and a team to look out for by season's end?  Just don't quite have the chemistry yet? I know they're talented as hell.

Watched a pre-season talk with Roy and Coach K and it seemed like both conceded that they were running 2 and 3 behind NC State....who is 4-2 right now.  I don't see it.

To keep it brief, I just don't see a spectacular year for the Heels this season; it'll not be a "bad" year but I don't see the strength and finesse yet to win the ACC Championship or finish better than the Elite 8 in the NCAA Championship.  Roy Williams has some work to do with a relatively new, young team that has not really played a great deal together so this will be an adjustment year for Carolina, no doubt about it; they'll need some time to see how the cogs, gears, and flywheels work together which may make for a better season later on;  and, three, the sport is as competitive as I've ever seen it nationally meaning everybody is bringing their A game every time and there's a lot of great players/teams out there beyond the ACC frontier; you've got to bring your best, always; despite the pedigree, Carolina is no exception.  The mixup of the top 3 in the ACC is prolly still Duke, Carolina, and NC State but that will shake-out with Duke on top (:puke:) as regular season play progresses.  Not an entirely positive outlook but I think there will be some great college hoops to watch this season.

I've watched the last two unc games (since I'm kind of a proxy nc fan like snags is with duke) and the thought I got was that they are extremely talented and young but very very raw. They really looked like a talented hs team. Kentucky and unc have the same double edged sword of too much talent most of the time which in turn leaves early to the nba. Calipari seems to adjust better than Roy. And so does coach K. You could see the talent show in the 2nd half of the butler game.

Here's the thing, though, and why I think teams like NC and Duke and Kansas etc. are always so good.  Of course, they've always got great players...that helps a little.  Ya think?  But they don't prepare for conference play by gorging on cupcakes and padding the record.  As I said, Duke has already played 3 top 5 teams, including Kentucky the second game out of the shute.  NC has already faced the #1 team in the nation and the program that's made the finals 2 out of the last 3 years.  Win or lose, it lets your guys know what it takes to play at that level, especially when you have so much turnover and so many young guys coming in and playing as freshmen right off the bat.

I put Michigan State in that same category except I think their talent level is always a step below the elite teams each year.  Izzo plays anybody and everybody each year and I think he gets more out of his players than anyone in the country.  You write them off and by tourney time, that's never the match up you want.

Not sure that I like Klaus's clever strategy of using up all of his time-outs before the last five minutes of the game...but it is exciting so far...

Yeah, yeah, I know it's the Auburn hoops thread but I had to say something about the Tarheel game tonight.  It's painfully obvious that they need work and lots of it.  Where's the leadership on the court?  Where's the rhythm?  Where's the consistent speed?  And 22 turnovers is not going to cut it, period!  And this was against UAB in OUR house.  It was a win but this display is very unsettling.
