The interests of the few, densely populated states should not outweigh the interests of the many, sparsely populated ones. They should be weighted as fairly and equally as possible. The electoral college does that, and does it well in my opinion. It exists to protect the rights of smaller states.
I didn't hear a single Republican bitch about it in 2000, nor a single Democrat endorse it, and yet today everyone it seems has completely flipped their position on it. That kind of hyper-partisan hypocrisy is what drives me insane. Now the opposite side of that same coin, I'd like to see Republicans throw the "this president wasn't even elected" line back at the Democrats that used the shit out of that line from 2000-2004.
Also, I agree with what others said about weighting it like NE & ME. I do believe that would be an improvement on a more fair system. However, it would have to be implemented state-by-state. Who's gonna budge on that first? California or Alabama?
