Here's Why...
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:49:17 AM »
there's no way we keep Chizik.  Just my rant saying what's already been said.  I know a change needs to be made.  I’ve accepted that Chizik is not the man for the job and it’s not going to be much/any better if he’s given another year to right the ship.  The results, or lack thereof, on the field speak for themselves.  But why has it gotten to this point?  Simple.  Practice...we talkin' bout practice...not a game...not a game....we talkin' bout practice.

We’ve been hearing reports about how the practices are run from several different sources, including people here on this board.  And now that I think about it, I'm convinced they're spot on.  I’ve been to 4 practices with Chizik at the helm and I really never paid that much attention to the intensity or how they were run because I was the wide-eyed kid in the candy shop. Just walking around going, “Cool, there’s Lutz….whoa, look at Trooper cutting up with the players…I have a porn-stache right in front of me.”

But looking back, there’s never been any tackling.  The only tackling they’ve ever done was in some scrimmaging with the 2’s and 3’s.  Otherwise, they stay broken up in groups and work with their respective units. This year, I admit that Chizik was an intense mofo, but it was mostly directed at the QB (Wallace) and the tempo.  It was apparent that they were running a hurry up to get the D ready for Climpsum, but funny thing about that was…the first team D stayed on the bench the entire time.  There were no 1’s involved in any scrimmage situation with the exception of Frazzers throwing some passes.

I've heard many a player say the games were a like a vacation after practicing all week under Pat Dye.  My very limited exposure tells me it's the exact opposite under Chizik.  I believe the players are unprepared for the speed and intensity of the actual game and they're getting their collective asses handed to them on Saturdays because of it.  I actually hated this tradition but anyone recall when Dye refused to allow his players to shake the opponents' hand after the game.  Win or lose, get your asses off the field.  That's the enemy.  Hated that practice but it was more evidence of how Pat Dye approached the game and how he demanded his players play and approach the game.

Everything begins and ends with preparation and I think Gene Chizik just flat out doesn't get it.  His methods don't work...period. Brian Van Gorder may be the best defensive mind in the game.  But his defense is going to practice the way Gene Chizik wants them to.  If Gene doesn't want them to hit mother fuckers til they bleed, if he doesn't want to demand that they run tackling drills til they either get it right or drop, if he doesn't snatch Jake Holland by his face mask and say do it right or fucking transfer, it doesn't matter what kind of corch Van Gorder is.  They are ALL going to prepare the way Gene Chizik wants them to. It's his show.  So, if we keep Chizik and get all these great recruits in here...again...they're still going to come out of the tunnel with the same attitude, the same lack of intensity, the same preparation.  They'll be bringing a knife to a gun fight.  He's got to go.

Please explain how 2010 happened then. Was it really just Cam and Smokes Farley being bad asses that carried this team?

It happened with 24 seniors who had been there, done that.  Add to that, juniors Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and Darvin Adams.  Add to that, Gus Malzahn calling plays with real talent to work with.  Even the coaches said time and time again when they got down in a game....and they got down a lot....that they didn't have to do anything different, no changes made.  They said the players just stayed calm and knew what they had to do.  That's senior leadership.  The piss poor tackling was just as evident in 2010 as it is today.

I'm beginning to believe that.  In 2010 we had at least two guys that knew what the hell to do, now we have eleven of them running around in eleven different directions on the same play.  Nobody seems to know what going on, including the coaches.  Time to dump Cheezit while we can.

The story of Paul Rhoades stopping practice and going back to Tackling 101....the article in 09' quoting Josh Bynes saying, "We don't tackle here.  Everyone just tries knock someone off their feet with the big hit".  The worst stretch of defense in Auburn history.  All tell me Gene Chizik does not know how to prepare his players to play the game at this level.

In his early years (1 and 2) I think he put them through hell because it was all new. By the mid 80s it was not hell. But it was hard. There were a good bit of walk-ons who played hard and was always taking it to the edge. Fights broke out almost daily. Not cut your throat fights, but fights out of frustration because nobody ever took a play off. This made the team solid. And the scout teams never got a break. It was WFO every day. There was a gritty edge to the teams then. Guys played smash mouth football along with being talented.

It was the off-season that Dye killed you in. By the time spring rolled around, you were glad to see winter go.

I think today's athlete is a bit different in that most show up having been the dominant player most of the time. The fight in the dog (overall) seems to be less. The talent is better, but the fight is not the same. I don't know if that is coaching, or a product of the times. Or a product of the type player being recruited.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Those 24 had also been made in to football players by the previous staff.  Developed, as it were.  Add Cam, and Rocker to develop Fairley...you got a football team.  Malzahn had all the toys he needed to have his way with even the best defenses.  Chiz's "steady as she goes" mentality weathered the off the field shit, and that same attitude is going to cost him his job today, when we need fire and brimstone, and someone willing to make hard decisions and changes.

Snaggie, great post, and spot on IMHO.

I'll throw another log on the coaching fire.

Ken Niumatalolo from Navy.

Would bring the Triple Option here as well as a lot of intense class. Led Navy to three bowls in four full seasons which is a major accomplishment. 35-24 overall. I like the dude.
