With this weekend's loss, we have replaced Ole Miss as the team with the longest losing streak against SEC opponents. I think by the margin of victories by our opponents, it's safe to say that we are the worst team in the entire SEC at present moment.
In all likelihood, we will place last in the SEC. Losing to every single team in the league.
People point to Barfield as our worst coach, but really they should point to Earl Brown.
In 1948 he was 0-8 in the SEC, and also lost to Clemson, tied La Tech, and only beat Southern Miss.
Two years later in 1950, he went a solid 0-10. He was fired.
Two years after that, Shug's second year in 1952, he beat Wofford & Clemson, but lost every other game.
Barfield got fired for going 0-6 in the SEC in 1980, but he was 5-6 overall.
1998 was the worst season that I personally remember, but hey, even then we at least beat Ole Miss. And both of our cupcakes. In those days, we would have tied our first cupcake, LaMonroe, and we would be sitting at 0-4-1.
So if we lose to Vandy next week, it pretty much guarantees that we have a worse season than 98. I'd say worse than the 1980 Barfield swan song, since at least he finished the season with 5 wins. Shug didn't get cupcakes, and at least he beat Clemson.
Therefore, I'd say you have to go back to Earl Brown's turd of a season in 1950 to find a season this bad in Auburn history.
