Alabama commit and Spanish Fort star Deon Johnson arrested for rape, sodomy (updated)
Deon "D.J." Johnson, a star athlete at Spanish Fort High who committed to Alabama in April, was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree rape and sodomy.

Johnson, 18, was arrested in Daphne at 3:30 p.m., according to Lt. Jud Beedy, spokesman for the Daphne Police Department.

Beedy said Johnson turned himself to police. The age of the alleged victim was not released.

Beedy said the incident in question happened between December and a week ago in Daphne.

"The (alleged victim's) parents came forward to make a complaint," he said. "We investigated and found enough evidence for an arrest."

Johnson was booked at the Baldwin County Corrections Center at 8:43 p.m. on Thursday. All felony cases from Daphne are transfered to the Corrections Center. According to the Baldwin County Sheriff's website, he has been released on $20,000 bond.

Johnson, a four-star prospect, caught a 60-yard touchdown pass and racked up 110 yards of offense in Spanish Fort's nationally televised win against Daphne on Monday.

He is ranked No. 9 on the al.com A-List of the state's top prospects. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Johnson caught 63 passes and had 19 touchdowns as a junior.

A female who answered the phone at Johnson's residence declined to comment.

Spanish Fort coach Mark Freeman did not immediately return a call to his cell phone, and it is unclear whether Johnson will play when the Toros host B.C. Rain tonight.

Funny how the comments immediately turn to Auburn and the "supposed" inability to deal with disciplinary issues on the team. Last I checked.. Alabama sweeps it under the rug, Auburn suspends indefinitely.

From a high level view though.. I hate to keep hearing about the trend of 4-5 star talent having criminal issues for any school. Criminal issues hit all the teams in the SEC it seems like. It's hard for any team to manage what any recruit does before they step on campus, you can only hope they have their priorities straight enough to stay out of trouble to get a free degree and possible NFL future.

Then again.. there are also ways to cop feels during a football game, which is understandable and respected (somewhat sort of very remotely relevant, but legal and impressive):

I must call you out on this one. The headcowitch was my HS football coach (circa 1977-80) and he's a bammer to the core. My sophomore year after we player Briarwood, he took us to the only bama game I have attended outside of an Iron Bowl. Hell, my junior and senior years our uniforms were bammerish style but not in color. Replace the pink with royal blue and you have it. All the way down to the helmets.
