Auburn notebook: Dismukes back on field for Tigers

AUBURN - Auburn will have additional help Saturday when it travels to Mississippi State for its SEC opener.

Coach Gene Chizik said sophomore center Reese Dismukes will return from suspension after missing Auburn’s opening loss against Clemson on Saturday night. Dismukes was arrested Aug. 25 for public intoxication.

Chizik declined to say whether he would replace fill-in starter Tunde Fariyike, who was Dismukes’ backup throughout spring practices and August preseason.

â€œWe’re going to wait and see how the week unfolds, and we’ll make that determination later in the week,” Chizik said. “As I said before, without going into details, when we feel like he’s done the things that we’ve asked him to do and we’re comfortable with that, you’d see him back on the field.”

Chizik also said fullback Jay Prosch would play Saturday.

Prosch’s mother, Iris, died Monday morning after battling brain cancer for more than a year. Chizik said Prosch was in Auburn for classes Tuesday and Wednesday. He will return home to Mobile for his mother’s funeral Thursday.

Chizik said Auburn is trying to work out details in hopes of attending the funeral as a team.

â€œThe family has to do what they have to do in terms of time frame and some things of that nature,” Chizik said. “We’re really trying to work through the details to see exactly what we can and can’t do. That’s kind of a work in progress right now.”

Lemonier expects more pass rush: His two sacks, eight tackles and constant havoc in Clemson’s backfield would’ve been enough to satisfy most defensive ends. For Auburn junior Corey Lemonier, it wasn’t.

Lemonier said he needs to dip his shoulder more on the pass rush, improving his leverage as he turns the edge and heads for the quarterback.

"It creates a problem for the tackles to go down and reach me,” Lemonier said. “It's because, you know, they're 6-(foot)-7-plus. So it's hard for them if you're kneeling on the ground, like running close to the ground.

â€œJust keep working on that, and the sky's the limit.”

Jones an impressive freshman: For now, freshman defensive back Jonathan Jones’ role is special teams. He had one tackle against Clemson, his first collegiate game.

Chizik said he’s excited for the freshman’s potential in the future.

“Jonathan Jones is going to be a really, really good player here if he’ll continue on the path that he’s on,” Chizik said. “He’s extremely conscientious in everything he does no matter what job or no matter what role you give him. He takes it very seriously, and it’s very important to him. He’s a very talented, gifted young man.”

While Jones is limited to special teams for now, Chizik said the freshman could play a bigger role later in the season.

â€œWe’re going to continue to utilize him and some of the other young guys on our special teams, but he showed up Saturday,” Chizik said. “We expect him to continue to show up, and we’re going to give him play bigger roles as he moves forward, but I really like him as a football player.”

Sloppy tackling a simple fix:   Chizik said there’s a simple solution to the tackling woes that plagued Auburn on Saturday.

â€œWell, we could tackle,” Chizik said. “That’ll help.”

Of course, it was Chizik’s shot at humor. But the real reason Auburn’s tackling broke down in the fourth quarter is no more complex.

Auburn’s inability to get off the field on third down early in the game prolonged Clemson possessions. Clemson finished with 87 plays against Auburn, and by the end of the game the defense had worn out.

â€œI think, and this is going to sound crazy, but getting yourself off the field on third downs and not playing 90-something plays in a game makes you better tacklers late in the game when you’re playing 65 plays instead of 95,” Chizik said.

Quick hits: Chizik said senior receiver DeAngelo Benton is still suspended, but he is practicing with the team. … Defensive backs Robenson Therezie and Erique Florence will be in the same backup role they were in against Clemson. … Despite the 0-1 record, Chizik said he doesn’t regret playing Clemson to start the season. “I think there is a lot of value in getting exposed in areas that really tell you the truth,” Chizik said. “We got a lot of truth told to us on Saturday night.”

Just my $.02, but if Dismukes (or any player) has done what is needed to be taken off suspension, then he should be given his starting position back too unless he does something on the field to lose it.   JMHO, YMMV.

Tackling?  They gots to get better in a fucking hurry.

Can he return punts and strip the ball?

I couldn't find the exact stat, but Clemson put up 320 yards of rushing.. I'm willing to bet 2/3 of that was after contact.

It'd be cool to try to mix in Jones during the season outside of special teams. I agree, he's going to be a hell of a player.

I would love to see the stats on that.  Of course I would love to see the LB's hit the right gaps, make the right reads to keep themselves in the play, not take steps backwards and not dive at a runners feet.  Would go a long way in stopping yards after contact.

Here was my take.  I'm not an X's and O's guy.  Prowler gave a break down about Clemson running the "Smash" over and over and how they blocked it.  In addition, how we were in the wrong defense for it.  Again, not smart enough to know if that's the case, but it makes sense.  What I saw were DE's going upfield and our interior linemen getting it handed to them.  Now, in the LB's defense, if Ellington shoots through untouched and has a step or two to make a move on you....you're toast.  Don't care what anyone says, that guy is damn quick and a 235 pound LB one on one with him is a mismatch 75% or 5/8ths of the time.  Wrong defense or the big uglies not having a sack?  I have no clue but once Ellington was past the first wave....

I'd say 4/6ths, although Chizad is the mathematician on here probably more like 5/18ths

I understand, and that was a part of it.  It would have been nice to see Evans/Garrett out there with them, but I still would rate them a D on Saturday.  We are hurting at LB, bad.  Really wish Rah-Rah wouldn't have had the neck injury.  I think he would have been a beast MLB for us this year if not.

Bynes was a step or two slow, but he overcame that by being so knowledgeable.  He knew exactly where to be and when.  He also knew how to get everyone else lined up to do the same.

I'm watching a youtube of the game now.  Watching Holland.  On a Clemson drive it's 1st and 10, and Clemson has one TE in the formation, and motions a TE or a WR in to the Wing and the RB is lined up in the pistol.  At the snap Holland is lined up 7 and a half yards off the ball!  The play is run all the way.  Two pulling linemen.  There's no show of pass by the QB at all, his hands stay low with the ball as he hands it on a counter play.  Holland bails for 3 yards before he realizes it's run!  The  blocker assigned to him has to chase him down, and makes first contact 8 yards down field as the RB comes right behind him.  Gain of 11, right through the B gap, and Holland isn't even part of the tackle when it's made.

Next play?  They run play action off the same OL blocking look and Holland is sucked in to the line by it.  Completion to the left flat for a gain of 20.

Next play run from just inside the 10, it's first and goal.  Holland gets lined up 5 yards off the ball (where he should be), and they run Inside Zone right up the Gut out of the pistol set.  The DTs actually do their job here, and make the double teams on them stay long enough that Holland can get up in the A gap, and meet the ball carrier. What does he do?  He doesn't even take a read/mirror step up, he just dances a bit, and waits to catch the ball carrier for a 7 yard gain.

That's just one drive where Holland is so full of fail it boggles the mind.

K was right, he's worse than bad!

Those plays start at about 7:45 in the 1st Q.
