New Helmet Rule

New Helmet Rule
« on: September 01, 2012, 01:23:11 PM »
After seeing it in action the past few days, I must say, it is without a doubt the dumbest rule change ever made.

ESPECIALLY since the helmets come off more easy now as a safety measure to reduce the number of neck sprains, etc.  You wait - it will happen before the season is over.  Three seconds left, a team down by 4, second down on the opposing team's two yard line... and the starting QB's helmet comes off...

THEN the shit will hit the fan.

I said it here back when I first heard it.  It's one of the least talked about rule changes, but has the potential to impact the outcome of games, and I suspect it will before season's end.

By the way, helmets come off more easily now because players have chosen to wear them looser because of comfort.  This rule is designed to change that.

They showed a graphic during the Georgia that said if it's under a minute left in a half, the team can opt to have a ten second run off and leave the player in the game.

Safety first!

That 10 seconds can be important.  The rule is designed to force players to wear helmets the fit properly, and thus are safer.  Here's the problem.  I'm unaware of any major injures that have been caused by helmets coming off.  Obviously I see the potential, but am not aware of any rash of "helmet off injuries" in the game.  I don't know if a better fitting helmet can better prevent concussions when it's on.
