Les Miles is...
« on: July 08, 2008, 01:44:38 PM »
I've got friends who are LSU fans and are all up in Les Miles hat.  Think he's some mad-scientist, evil-genius type. Brilliant tactician who knows the odds and gambles correctly almost every time.  I, on the other hand, think he's a functioning simpleton who caught a few lucky breaks.  They are so up his ass, though that I gave it a lot of thought and tried to figure out if I didn't like him because he has pig eyes or because he wears his hat like an assclown or because he talks like a babboon.  Is he a good coach as they stridently proclaim?

And then I figured it out.  Les Miles is Barry Switzer circa Dallas.  Switzer was an addle-brained ass who earned a rep at OU by fielding a team of outlaws.  When he was hired as the coach of the Cowboys everybody figured he was in over his head. But the simpleton went and won a Super Bowl.  He done went and proved EVAHbody wrong, by GAW! He belonged in the NFL.  Except he didn't.  The idiotic decisions he made came home to roost in subsequent years when the talent level wasn't quite able to overcome his stupidity. And this will be the future of Lester Miles.

Book it.  And remember that the DAY Mike Price was hired at Alabama, I called him Bobo The Clown and predicted that he wouldn't last a season.

Now, I'm going to play Devils advocate.  THe argument would go, you say he is a simpleton, but he has won a National Championship and a SEC Championship.  That is more than Tuberville, and Tuberville has coached in the SEC for 9 years...Miles has been here only 3 years.

Barry Switzer won an NFC title and a Super Bowl.

Was he a better coach than Bud Grant? Marv Levy?

I think Les Miles is the guy in the trucker hat who wanders into a casino, puts a quarter in the Megaplier Progressive Slot Machine, and wins $3,583,290.45 on the first pull.

Apples and Oranges.

No.  Oranges and tangerines maybe, but definitely in the same family.

Switzer was a dumb luck coach who had serious NFL success. Miles is, to me, a dumb luck coach who stumbled backward into success at LSU.

How is that different?

Les Miles is a baffoon who had enough talent on his teams to take risks.  Almost all of his risks were successful.

I'd agree with you, Kaos, but LSU's talent pool isn't dwindling.  They're recruiting a lot of speed, and they still have a lot of talent returning.  Credit Saban if you want, but Miles walked into the easiest coaching jobs in America.  Unless Bama/Arkansas/Ole Miss/Miss St really turn things around, LSU will continue to be a top ten team.

I agree with your sentiment, but you lose the right to call someone a buffoon if you can't spell the fucking word correctly.

Yeah, I've never understood the whole "baffoon" thing.  I've seen it a lot, though.

NFL, College football.  He may be lucky, but if it continues will you still think of it as luck?

If he grows wings and a bird beak will I still think of him as human?

I'm dealing in absolutes here.  Until proven otherwise, I think Les Miles is nothing but Barry Switzer in homo colors.

He is an idiot.  But a successful one to this point.  What is the nexus of his success?  I would say superior talent.  Of course, that can only take you so far.

As far as the national championship, who can deny that LSU backed themselves into the title game through a series of very, very fortunate events?

We should have won that frickin' game.

He's lucky and he's had pretty decent coordinators to tell his very talented players what to do.

He's had the perfect storm and Forrest Gump's bastard goat-child could have reproduced his results thus far.

And one of his assets is now at Nebraska.

I think they fall from the perch of the West this season.  And we are there to grab the baton.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
