Meh, Gus served his purpose at Auburn, and Auburn is better for it.  I lost a little respect for him when he took Dyer with him, but also get that it's all about winning, and nothing else really matters despite yapping about "discipline".  At the end of the day, if you bring home a trophy, you got job security.  If you don't, you can graduate 100%, and have no criminal or discipline issues, and you'll still be replaced.

As for the Xs and Os aspect of it, yeah, I'm glad we're moving back to more conventional Offense and leaning on Defense and special teams.

Not that it matters now, but I'd still like to know who was making the decisions to use/not use Dyer all through the season last year.  If it was Gus, and Chiz didn't interfere, makes me wonder why Dyer left with him.  Would kind of assume the two butted heads.  Was it Chizik?  Something wasn't right.  You don't run the guy 157 times in one game on the road to beat a top 10 team and then give him 3 carries a half in other games.

It's obvious there was somewhat of a tug of war with Chiz and Malzahn over Dyer and playing time. Sorry but with Chizik on this one knowing what we do now with Dyer. Dude stays true to his convictions of running a tight ship and I like it. You can run a tight ship AND win. In fact Mark Richt proves this via doing the opposite thing the last 10 years. Enough talent to field an NFL team at UGA the last decade but the guy let's thugs run the locker room. With their talent level, they should have went much higher than they have. Sometimes there is addition by subtraction and I think Dyer is an example of this. With UGA Crowell is an example of that. Congrats to Marky Mark for doing the right thing for once.

Perhaps there was coach infighting? Perhaps Chizik "suggested" he take the Arkansas St. head job, could make sense why he took it for less money.

I have evidence.  Chiz didn't run him off, not directly, but he did meddle in the offense last year, and that pissed Gus off enough to leave. 

As for making the decision about Dyer?  Ultimately that call was made by Chiz.  Was he lobbied by Malzahn?  Most certainly.  It was the only weapon he had.

All indications...to me anyway...are that Gene Chizik is only going to be as good as the people he hires.  I acknowledge the blasphemy in using this example, but you always hear, "Kirby Smart is the DC but everyone knows it's Lord Saybinz defense and that he runs the show."  Love the way Chiz handles and represents the AU program, but for the most part, I think he stayed out of the way and let his coordinators run the show on their respective sides of the ball.  The Dyer thing may have been the exception.  The Virginia game told me all I needed to know about that.  It must have just about killed the guy to watch Ted Roof do a hatchet job on the AU defense.

I would say that most coaches run their programs this way.  For a variety of reasons, first being that it makes it harder to control the little nuances of the positions while being head coach. Second, most people don't like to me micro-managed and the egos coaches have would no doubt piss people off.  There are exceptions to this rule obviously with the likes of Petrino, Spurrier and others. While I am sure _saban micro-manages the hell out of his coaches.

Overall, I think Chiz is as you say, but he is also the CEO, and while he may not get on the headsets and say "call this play" or "run this coverage" he did, last year, take control of the overall game plan to try to help the defense, and hide the deficiencies on the offense.  As bad as it was, that could have been a 5-7 team, and we won 8 without a QB that was worth a shit, and with Freshmen and Sophomores all over the place.  IMHO, it was a helluva coaching job by Chizik.

I guess I should have said "surround himself with dumbasses".  And, I still believe Roof was hired for a reason, and he served the purpose, albeit it was ugly to watch.

I don't know if he's a dumbass or not.  His defense didn't work worth a shit with the personnel he had, and that's not to say it was bad, because he had talent in 2010, and still sucked!  I didn't like the overall way his defense seemed non-aggressive by design.   Maybe, by definition, in coaching circles, that equals "dumbass".

All I know is I'm looking for a lot more toughness this year, especially out of our defense.  I readily acknowledge how young AU was and what the coaches did/didn't have to work with.  But getting beat like they did against Arky, LSU, Georgia and Bammer is unacceptable in any situation.  I've said this before but it bears repeating. There were several games last year where I had no doubt in my mind that they quit.  Whether it was the coaching staff or the players themselves...doesn't matter. I can take getting 40 plus hung on a team if it's simply a matter of a huge talent differential. But watching them lay down and not even try to stop UGA from running between the tackles 70 plays in a row...having an LSU player say publically that AU's players quit....made me sick to my stomach. Anyone recall the LSU fullback say, "Come on, you're better than this."?

I'm thinking/hoping it was because we had no leaders out there.  No Josh Bynes to stare you into playing harder.  No Nick Fairly saying , "I'll handle this shit myself".  I believe  has the right mentality and will make his guys play with a chip on their shoulders.  Pat Dye's first team went 5-6.  They were half as talented as most teams they played. But they got after your ass and they were playing for a coach that said, "Fuck shaking their hands.  Kick em' in the teeth and head to the locker room."  That's what I want to see more of.

Btw, Gus' move to be ASU's HC was the smartest move he could make. I said it before and I'm saying it again, it's better to learn the ropes at a small University and work your way up, than it is to start at a bigger University and fall flat on your face (same road that Coach Chizik took, as well as many other big named coaches).
