iTunes is stupid...or maybe I am...fucking help me, please

I want to redeem a gift card, so I open iTunes and try to sign in.  My password does not work.  No problem, re-set password and...new password does not work.  Fuck me.

I download the newest version and I can't fucking install it.  I moved my iTunes from my C drive to an external hard drive.  The update installer launches automatically and offers no installation options.  It can't find iTunes on my system and I can't point it to the appropriate drive.

Suggestions?

i don't think you can move the itunes software over to an external and expect it to work teh bueno.  content such as music, tv shows, books, etc..., yes...to keep your cpu HD free for midget porn. you might need to re-install iTunes...then direct iTunes to recognize your library on the external.

Wes, try moving your media files to an external device, then completely uninstall iTunes.  Once done, try a fresh install.

That was my original concept.  The problem (again, could definitely have been operator error) was that once I pointed iTunes to the music library on the external drive...it made a copy of everything in the iTunes folder on the C drive. 

Running iTunes on the external has been no problem heretofore.  Apparently I just can't upgrade it this way.  Fucking stupid.

Yeah, all my shit's on an external server that I access on my wireless network, so it's not even connected to my computer. I have a little bit of problems going through the network when adding or updating songs, but nothing major.

It is annoying that once you've pointed it to a library, that's it. Otherwise, you have to import, which takes considerably longer, especially with my massive library, and the aforementioned fact that it has to travel over the network. Only way I can change it up if I wanted to is to reinstall iTunes again.

Now, my question is thus: If I re-install iTunes on the C drive, I assume I'll need to delete the old version off the external drive.  What will be the best way to preserve the iTunes music library that exists on the external drive?  Can I just rename it?  I don't want to spend a day and a half waiting for the folder to cut/paste into another location.

Or change that media folder location. I personally like mine organized, and I like it storing a copy in that central location. Otherwise, if you import it from your desktop, if you remove it from your desktop it's gone.

When iTunes asks you were to look for music, just point it to that same iTunes folder on the external drive.

Leaving intact the rest of the iTunes folders around it?  In other words, do I need to erase the vestiges of iTunes (apart from the library) from the external to re-install a fresh iTunes program on the C?

Uninstalling iTunes through your program files won't delete the music folders.

It may not even delete all the program files in that directory. I would delete the program first, then erase any shit it left hanging around that you don't need in that folder. Then when you reinstall, point iTunes back to your music folder.
