Two things:

1) I was not bitching about the Saints.  I was laughing at them and their idiot Ewok.

2) This new plan solves absolutely nothing.  Worse than it was before.  I'd prefer we eliminated the entire thing and went back to the old bowl system and (like GF said) multiple NCs every year.

Can I ask how it is worse? At least there is not a 3rd man left out now. Under the new system, the 1983 and 2004 Auburn teams probably/possibly win NC's. Under the old systems (Bowls and BCS), they were both left out and screwed of a NC.

Worse is subjective I guess.

I don't like the whole playoff concept and hate this one completely.  Used to think i wanted it.  Have since decided I don't.

I don't think it's perfect by any means because you will always have a certain amount of subjective judgement involved, but this is a step in the right direction to me. That is, if the right direction is thinking they should decide it on the field. I have no issue with it being the top 4 teams in football. I've never once sat down and watched the BCSCG and thought to myself, "if only that #5 team could have gotten into this game, they would take it". There has always been 3-4 teams that are above the rest. Not always, but most of the time. I.e. 2004.

Hey guys can we get a moratorium on talking about how the 2004 team was robbed? 2010 team delivered the hardware. Come to the Arena and see it for yourself. All this 2004 talk reminds me too much of those Bammers who pine about lost rings and such.

It's very relevant because this is ultimately what caused this change to happen. It doesn't matter if we had won 5 since then. The point was, the 2004 Auburn team showed how flawed the BCS really was. People that complain about the 4 team playoff should remember how shitty that felt knowing that if we had this system then, we would have at least had a shot at it all.

Even if there is a year where 5 teams can legitimately be considered neck-and-neck, under the current system, it would be even more of a mess. Three legitimate condenters would be left out instead of just one.

Last year is a perfect example of this.

Current system gave you Alabama & LSU. No questions asked, Alabama, despite losing to LSU on the field once, and not being their conference champions, got to play.

Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Oregon, all had at least as legitimate a claim as Alabama to be included. Oklahoma State undoubtedly got railroaded with only an OT loss on their schedule. Either Stanford or Oregon would get left out in the new system, but boo-fuckin' hoo. Oregon had two losses, one of which being to LSU, so they likely would have gotten dumped.

Again, they'd be closer in the new system than they were in the old.

I used to really want a playoff for college football.

I hate the BCS.

I'd prefer that the entire concept be eliminated and we went back to the ambiguity of the bowls.  I'd rather enter New Year's Day with four teams all in the running to possibly win the NC than have a two-game tournament.

Even though we got screwed in 1983 how awesome was that?  Texas was unbeaten and in the Cotton.  Nebraska was unbeaten and in the Orange.  Auburn had one loss and was in the Sugar.  Miami had one loss and went to the Orange.

Texas lost to the Georgia team Auburn had beaten a few weeks before.
Nebraska lost to the Miami team that had lost to the same Florida squad Auburn hammered.
Auburn (ranked third) beat Michigan.

We went to bed that night sure that AU was going to win the NC (even though NBC trumpeted the Nebraska/Miami game as the defacto title game).  If we'd beaten Michigan 33-7 instead of 9-7 I think we would have.  Or if Miami hadn't denied a two-point try at the end of the game to defeat Nebraska I don't think the Canes would have jumped us.  The drama swayed people.

In the new scenario we'd play Nebraska and Texas would play Miami and then the winners would meet in a Super Bowl.

I don't know precisely WHY I hate it, but I do.  I don't like it at all.  I wanted it for a long time but now I just don't.

I think you just are prone to hate anything and everything, no matter what it is.

Except KISS.

There is no reason that makes any sense whatsoever that this is not an improvement over the old system, which was an improvement over the system before it.

I saw Thayer Evans write some bullshit article about how it will be "at least twice as controversial", because now instead of two teams having a shot you'll have four, which means that instead of having two bubble teams that arguably could have made it, you'll have four.

That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Those four would not even be in the conversation under the current system, ipso-facto, it's a fairer, less controversial system. The two teams that "should" have a shot, now will have a shot. How is this hard to understand?

Right.

At least Stanford and Okl State would have a say in it under the new system. The complaint wasn't that Oregon didn't make it. The complaint was that Okl State and even Stanford were left out. Under the new system, they get a shot.

I would rather have 4 of 5 legit teams have a shot than 2 of 5 legit teams. That's why I say its a good step. No system is going to make everyone happy. Look at Kaos, he doesn't even know WHY he doesn't like a playoff. I could careless about how January of 1984 had everyone on the edge of their seats - that's not the objective. The clear goal is to find the best team in football. And under the new system, this is the closest we have ever been to doing that.

The Evans argument has no bearing on my thought process.

I like college football for what it is.  The BCS removed those old sectional rivalries that were played out in the big New Year's Day Bowls.  I never really liked that.

Maybe that's because it isn't what I grew up with.  I remember waking up with my head hurting on New Year's Day excited because college football started at 10 in the morning and went until midnight.  ALL of those games had the potential to matter.

Now they don't.

Maybe I'll like it better after I see it in action, but I don't think anything can replace the awesomeness of the old New Year's Day and the Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Rose Bowls all taking the stage.

Used to think i wanted it.  Have since decided I don't.

Basically, you're a woman: I want X.  <you are given X>.  I hate X, I want Y.

I have no issue with it being the top 4 teams in football.

I don't think the new system guarantees that you get #s 1-4 as they are ranked in the poll.  This new committee system gives the power to them to say, "Well, Boise didn't crack the top 5 because the play nobody, but dammit we really think they ought to have a shot."  Or...insert Hawaii or any other nobody that throws up points and wins against patsies.

Hey guys can we get a moratorium on talking about how the 2004 team was robbed? 2010 team delivered the hardware. Come to the Arena and see it for yourself. All this 2004 talk reminds me too much of those Bammers who pine about lost rings and such.

Oklahoma State undoubtedly got railroaded with only an OT loss on their schedule.
So, Alabama should be penalized for losing a street fight to the undisputed #1 team in the country, but Okie St. shouldn't be penalized for losing in OT to IOWA FUCKING STATE? That argument didn't make sense in January, and it sure as fuck doesn't now. The old system was meant to pit the best team in the country according to the system against the second best team in the country according to the system. It just so happens that Alabama was the second best team in the country according to the system.

(Part of getting older is nostalgia.  I like things the way they were.)

100% agreed.

College football is retarded.  I'm not using that colloquially.  It's retarded because it's failing to iron out the real kinks for the sake of money.

Here's my problem with the playoff - college football is NOT professional.  It's not about making money for TV stations, business owners, and advertisement agencies.  It's about pageantry, school spirit, rivalries, conferences, and bragging rights.  It's about education.  It's about preparing young men to enter the workforce and prospective football players to enter the NFL.

I understand that money is involved and that there's no way around it, but look around at the bowl games.  Does the Rose Bowl matter?  Do the 35 "Richie's Car Wash Sponsored by Hertz McDonalds" bowls mean anything to you besides something to put on in the background of a mundane Christmas party?

Ever since college football turned into a cash cow (queue the BCS and now the playoff), the quality of the season and postseason has diminished.  The regular season still matters?  Bullshit.  Hit .500 after scheduling 4 pissant teams, and you've got a bowl game.  Start the season outside of the top 10 preseason poll?  You're going to have a bad time if you have any desire to win the mythical championship game conjured up by magical fairy men who cast a flippant vote after perusing the nine channels of ESPN.  But hey, at least you might get into the Rave Motion Pictures Holiday Inn Delta Bowl on New Year's Day, which has a spot open for bowls like that because the playoff bowls are spread out into March.

If college football really wants to produce a valid tournament to produce a champion, it needs to get rid of the garbage.  Clean out the trash.  Get rid of the Boise States, the San Diego States, the Idahos, the Wyomings, the Western Kentuckies, and the UNLVs.  Trim the league down to 60 teams, 6 conferences, 10 game regular season, and then take the conference champions plus two wildcards and call it a day.  At least that would be tangible.

This new playoff is merely a facade.  What's most sad is that college football could be special.  It could be unique.  Go back to the old system.  Only votes determine who the national champion is, and let the entire country not give a real shit about it.  College football is great that way.  What you have now is a season full of meaningless games save for five or six if you have a shot at your conference title.  You have a postseason full of meaningless games especially now that a playoff has been implemented.

And you also now have a better shot at seeing more Alabama-LSU repeat type games.

Just look at the last few years:

2011: LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford
2010: Auburn, Oregon, Stanford, TCU
2009: Alabama, Texas, TCU, Cincinnati
2008: Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas

And now, there's a selection committee.  More mythology in college football.  Who is this committee?  What's their criteria for selecting?  How removed are they from the university presidents, athletic directors, coaches, and boosters?  How well do they know the TV execs, the advertisement agencies, and the bookies?

You really think they're going to select the best game?  For the fans?  For fairness?

Ha.

This committee feels like a concoction of BSPN to give their talking asses something to stir the ratings pot with.

Ehhh whatever. At least there's still the NFL until Roger G suspends the whole league for contact.
