I am SO going to file this one away for the inevitable day when one of mine crosses the line...
WAY TO GOA Houston mom has taught her preteen daughter an important lesson on the dangers of posting potentially embarrassing photos to the internet after a photo she posted of the child as punishment has gone viral.
ReShonda Tate Billingsley, an author of numerous books, looked through her 12-year-old daughter’s Instagram postings and found the girl had posted a photo of herself holding a bottle of her father’s alcohol with the caption: “Wish I could drink this Vodka.â€
Billingsley responded by posting a photo of the girl holding a sign that said: “Since I want to post photos of me holding liquor, I am obviously not ready for social media and will be taking a hiatus until I learn what I should and should not post. Bye-Bye : (†Only the bottom portion of her face, which appears to be crying, can be seen. The photo was posted to the girl’s Instagram account and to her mother’s Facebook page. The photo went viral with over 10,000 shares in just a few hours. You can see it here.
In an entry on the parenting website MyBrownBaby.com, Billingsley explains she wanted her daughter’s punishment to come at the same place where the inappropriate behavior occurred: online.
“My daughter actually begged for a spanking instead, which she would’ve taken, gotten over in no time, and not realized the seriousness of her actions. Now, if and when she ever gets back on social media, she’ll think long and hard before posting anything crazy,†Billingsley wrote.
Billingsley is just one of many parents who have taken to the internet, or the streets, in order to publicly humiliate their children as punishment. One father, who was recently profiled on ABC’s 20/20 segment on “Extreme Punishment,†gained internet fame after he posted a video of himself shooting his daughter’s laptop with a hand gun in retaliation for a post she had made that badmouthed her family on Facebook.
