BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior Seau played just one year under Nick Saban, but he left quite the impression on the Alabama coach.

That's why Saban was hit hard by the news that Seau took his own life last week with a self-inflicted gun shot to the chest.

"That is one of the most difficult things I've had to deal with probably this year," Saban said Tuesday, speaking before his Crimson Caravan appearance at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center.

"You always have these guys, if you're fortunate, that are really special people that you have an opportunity to coach and play on your team or whatever. Junior Seau was one of those guys."

When Saban took over as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005, he persuaded Seau, then 36, to return to the team for what would be his 16th season in the NFL. Saban was apparently so convincing that Seau not only took him up on the offer, but he did so at a discounted price.

Saban said Seau's value to the team wasn't able to be quantified.

"He was the most popular guy on the team, the most positive, the most upbeat, most enthusiastic, energetic, great practice player, great football player," Saban said. "He loved football probably as much as anyone I've ever been around."

Seau left Miami and Saban the following season, as he finished his career with the New England Patriots.

Saban said he wished there was something he or anyone else could have done to prevent Seau from committing suicide.

"It's really difficult to think that maybe there might have been something you could do to help him," Saban said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

"Man, what a great guy and a great football player."

Buried among this absolutely fucking ridiculous pandering about Saban's ability to connect with people, particularly those who are dead and cannot dispute their deep bond, is the fact that this miniature ghoul allegedly convinced Seau to play another year and even chipped him on money to have a chance to work alongside the dwarfish fuck (what a fantastic fucking recruiter this Saban cat is).

So what you're saying is that had Saban not been such a master recuiter and manipulator, Seau might have stayed retired and probably would have sustained less damage to his physical and mental health?

Hmmm.  Nick Saban helped kill Junior Seau.  Lawsuit.

I'd love to hear this conversation.

"Well, I wanted to retire, but since you're the greatest football coach to ever grace the presence of a football field, I just can't say no. I know you've never coached a down in the NFL (and if I could see into the future I'd see what a miserable utter failure you'd be at this level), but goddammit you won one National Championship, despite a blemished record. I don't need all this money. Take my money from me. I don't need all this. It's clogging up my bank account. I just need the honor of being in your presence for a year before you jump ship back to the college game."
