Junior Seau Dead Cops Suspect Suicide
Exclusive

11:23 AM PDT -- The coroner just arrived on scene.

NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and a law enforcement source at the scene tells us cops believe he shot himself.

Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Cops are currently at Seau's home -- located in San Diego County -- and were seen talking with a man who was inside the house and appeared distraught.

We're told Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and 3 kids yesterday saying, "Love you." We're told they all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong.  We're told he last saw his kids 3 weeks ago.

Sources close to Seau tell us family members didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks.

Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.

Recently saw him on Food Network on that show they were doing on hot and spicy foods.  Dude was always upbeat and smiling when I saw him. Wow, just wow!  Sad stuff.

Kind of like Mr Penny. You just never know what someone has going on behind the scenes.

ESPN doesn't find this newsworthy. Hasn't mentioned it yet. Instead it's been a nonstop barrage of shitting on the Saints. Like a dog humping a leg, I guess it's best to let them finish.

My guess - since this involves a possible DEATH and suicide at that -is they are waiting on official confirmation before posting the story. Lots of news sites have been bitten through the years falsely reporting a celebrity's death.

Yeah, they want to be absolutely sure before they report something, just like they were for the Saints' "spygate" scandal last week...

Forget that.  They were absolutely sure about Cam Newton last year.

Screw ESPN and their sensationalist, hackneyed reporting.

Normally I would agree with that.....

BUT, this involves a death and possible suicide. That's not something you can afford to mess up, and not nearly as easy to sweep under the rug if erroneous.

It's not erroneous.  The fact is that they missed it.

Exactly. If they're not first on a big story, they refuse to acknowledge it for as long as they can. I guess the hope is one day one of these reports will be wrong and they can claim the high ground, which is a fucking joke with them.

The serious nature of misreporting a death didn't stop them from falsely reporting that Paterno had passed before he actually did.

I didn't say not reporting Seau was erroneous. Its just my guess that they are putting together their story now and getting confirmation now. Someone's death is a little different than reporting on Football gossip. With Seau, I see a lot of organizations out there that havent officially reported it yet. It's one of those stories where you want to get your stuff straight at least in a halfway decent manner. USAToday JUST posted something per Google news. TMZ being the ones who broke the story may have had something to do with it. Who knows. Main point being, I don't think ESPN is NOT reporting this because they want to beat up on the Saints some more.

The serious nature of misreporting a death didn't stop them from falsely reporting that Paterno had passed before he actually did.

They reported Paterno's (along with everyone else) death because a spokesperson from the hospital erroneously reported it to them. That story also may be why some major publications are holding off for a min on this one. Although it does look like Jr is no longer with us. Sad story really. Always liked him.

EDIT, they have posted a story:

Sad news to report.  Today, just after Saints LB Jonathan Vilma was suspended for trying to intentionally injure and disfigure opposing players for a bounty, another former LB, Junior Seau, passed away.  When we return, Outside The Lines will ask, "Can payments being made to star college quarterbacks really be stopped?"

Da-na na Da na na.

This isn't difficult.  The story happened, and TMZ scooped it.  ESPN was late in getting it.  Whether or not they were "checking their sources" is irrelevant.  What's worst about ESPN is that they never give credit to other news organizations.  They act like they're the end-all, be-all with sports.

Why not say "TMZ is reporting...."  Or later on say, "First reported by TMZ"?

I guess in a free market, they don't have to.  But people like me notice, and it's why I rarely, ver rarely ever go to ESPN.com or turn on ESPN.

I always assumed there was a rule about giving credit but now that I think about it, that's only when using clips or highlites from other sources.  For instance, I listen to Yahoo Sports Radio a lot and whenever they play a cut from a homerun or touchdown call, they'll always follow with "That call was courtesy of WDHN...."

But you're exactly right.  ESPN is not going to give credit when it's due nor apologize when they mucked it up.
