In an upcoming issue of ESPN The Magazine, writer Mark Schlabach explores the issue of marijuana use in college football, and among those interviewed for the feature was Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

"If marijuana infiltrates your program, then everyone is going to do it and you've got a huge problem," Saban said. "If you don't test and do it right, that's what's going to happen -- because it's everywhere on college campuses."

The Crimson Tide coach said that while marijuana use can be a pervasive problem that can cripple a football program, he believes it is best handled by the teams themselves rather than by the NCAA.

"I think if the NCAA did it, it would be just like the NCAA is now," Saban said. "They come and test at a bowl game, and if a guy tests positive, he's suspended for a year and they don't spend any money on [counseling or rehabilitation]."

Schlabach mentions several recent cases in college football involving players accused or convicted of marijuana-related charges, including former Auburn running back Michael Dyer. Dyer testified during ex-Auburn player Antonio Goodwin's trial on armed robbery charges that he consistently smoked synthetic marijuana while playing for the Tigers. Dyer was suspended for last season's bowl game and has since transferred to Arkansas State.

Maybe Schlongbach should resolve the sentences at the end about Dyer by saying:

Dyer was a bad apple. Dyer smoked pot and owned the gun used. He is no longer on the team because Chizik don't play that shit.

That would have been asking for too much.

Dyer infiltrated the entire team with his halucinogenic drugs and now they're all a bunch of hippy dippy pot-heads. In fact, they still get their pot from Dyer. Even Trooper, while he watches big butt teenage porn. This needs to be handled.

I'm not saying I disagree with that statement. Even though I'm far removed from college life, it was in fact everywhere when I was at AU. It wasn't even that big a deal. But, we have 85 scholarship student athletes on the football team and about 23,000 other students on campus..and the focus is on whom?

Who gives a shit if Biff Carrington does 4-5 bong hits in the basement of the SAE house and drives off to class in the BMW daddy bought him? We've got these thug athletes from the projects coming in here with their maryjuwanna and other hip hop drugs. We should suspend them for a year.

FWIW, this is the same guy that I had a twitter battle with over his interpretation of that ATL Journal Constitution interview, in which he implied the kid was intimidated by Saban's majesty, and was making fun of Chizik's recruiting tactics.

I think I posted back then that the way he wrote it..leaving out the various quotes and questions...left it to the exact interpretation you suggested. Sports talk guy, after reading it the next morning, was asking the question of what do you think about this kid making fun of Gene Chizik as opposed to Lord Saybinz?
