I hate to sound jaded and ugly about the reason for his exit from the campaign but quite frankly I think it was due to the fact that he was not going to win his native state of PA.  If he can't win his own must-win state in the Primary how can he rationalize being able to beat The Pharaoh in the General Election?  You're right that this leaves him with a little dignity at least.
