Here's my take on Chiz after 3 years.  As crazy as this might sound, I think this is a very important year for how Auburn people feel about him and his abilities to take a program to...and keep it at the next level.  We already know the country hates to give him any respect and they do in fact view 2010 as.."Well, they had Cam...and paid him on top of that."

2009:  Great job, especially by the offensive staff.  Coming off the year from hell...no need to go into the particulars.  But, you kind of expect things to take a turn for the better with a new staff, new schemes, new attitude etc.  Good job, no complaints.

2010: The perfect storm.  Yes, we had the best offensive player maybe in the history of the game.  And yes, we probably had the most disruptive defensive player in 2010.  But to even suggest those were the sole reasons for success is lude-uh-chris.  Senior dominated O-line.  Senior dominated D-line....senior LB's...3 bad ass receivers...Lutz....Dyer...MacProne.  Can't discredit the job Chizik and staff did, especially with handling the controversy and impending "Hammer".  First rate all the way.

2011: The perfect storm of shittastic recruiting efforts in Tubs' last years.  2010 team gutted by what...26 graduating seniors?  The early departures of Fairly, Cam and Adams.  One look at last year's departing senior class tells it all.  When your top three seniors are Freeman and Turnstile Green and a premier long snapper...you're in a world of hurt.  It showed

Now, fast forward to 2012.  4th year.  These are Chizik's players.  This is his team.  This is his staff.  It's a well used phrase when you say you're as good as the people around you. I think now, more than ever this holds true for Corch Chin.  Until he comes out and says something different, no one can make me believe that Gene Chizik "mettles" or has much input into the offensive or defensive coaching and/or game plans.  The Virginia game and the players' comments told me all I needed to know about that. I think the man tries to hire the coaches who best fit his philosophies...and lets them coach.  I think Chizik is the CEO and the face of the program.  He's a calming, steady influence on the team and Auburn people.  But, there's a pretty big risk in handling it that way.  You'd better hope and pray you hired the right guys.

Is it all about the Jimmy's and Joe's?  Maybe...probably.  But when your D is the worst in the history of Auburn football and an opposing player tells the world that Auburn players quit....If you're going to let your coaches coach, you'd better have hired someone with the ability to change that. That's why I think this is a more pivotal year for Chizik than most.

All good points.

I would expand on that and note that Chizik has considerably outperformed the expectations set for him all three years he's been here. What other coach can honestly say that?

His first season was supposed to be a disaster. We were supposed to go ahead and concede this decade to Saban. Finebaum couldn't find 4 wins on our schedule. Chizik put together a very respectable 8 win season in spite of that.

2010. Goes without saying expectations were exceeded. Absolutely no one even entertained the idea of us winning the National Championship until after the LSU game eight games into the season.

2011 was back to the bottom-of-the-barrel 2009 expectations. Again Finebaum couldn't find four wins. Again, he doubled that with eight.

Expectations are about at 8-9 wins this year. Slightly improved from last year.

If he exceeds them again, he's still one of the best coach's in the country for my dollar.

As far as those coaches compared to Chizik?
Quote
1. Nick Saban, Alabama This is like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" coming in at #1 on a "Best songs of the 90's countdown". You may prefer Basket Case by Green Day, but whatever, everyone has pretty much agreed upon this, so arguing is futile. It falls on deaf ears to most people, but Chizik won his title in 2 years to Saban's 3, and didn't do it sharing a state with a commonly accepted football God.
2. Bobby Petrino, Arkansas Can't argue with this one much since he's owned Auburn 3 out of 4 years he's been there. Except, of course, that Chizik has an SEC and a National Championship that Petrino doesn't.
3. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina Made this guy our bitch, what, 6 times in a row? That spans over to back when he was at Florida? Same number of National Championships except Chizik's was last year and Spurrier's was more than half my life ago. People born when he last won one are driving cars now.
4. Mark Richt, Georgia Ppffffft. Two SEC Championships in over a decade coaching. Zero Natties.
5. Dan Mullen, Mississippi I think this is the most ludicrous one. I remember hearing when he and Chizik were hired at the same time that Mullen was a home run hire and Chizik was that hire's polar opposite. Kiffen was the third new hire and he was supposed to be not as good as Mullen, but lightyears ahead of Chizik. Well, Kiffen's gone having never beaten Chizik, and Mullen's still here three years later without a win against him. He's barely over .500 overall (.552) and he's 9 for 15 in conference (.375). By what fucking measurement can you possibly place him above Chizik?
6. Les Miles, LSU Can't argue much with the record. Everyone knows he's a lucky clueless sonofabitch. Bringing Jefferson back and the resulting backlash and team meltdown should count for something, though.
7. Gary Pinkel, Missouri Ok, now you're just fucking with us. In over a decade he's won the Big 12 NORTH only three times. Zero Big 12 Championships. In a decade at Toledo, he could only manage to win the MAC once. Needless to say, no National Titles.
8. James Franklin, Vanderbilt He's a great coach for Vanderbilt. Unfortunately that's like saying he's pretty smart, for a kid with Downs who gets stoned three times a day.

When bammers say "I can't find 4 wins on Auburn's schedule" that's not "expectations" that fucking mullet headed, bammer running their cock holsters.

Now, as for Finebaum, he's done a great job of making sure 2010 is viewed as "bought and paid for" and thus, didn't really happen, and can't be credited to Chizik.
