The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms with free agent guard Ben Grubbs, the club announced Thursday morning. The deal is worth around $7 million a year, according to a league source, including $16 million in guaranteed money and a $10 million signing bonus.

The arrangement means the Saints have moved with alacrity to replace departed guard Carl Nicks, who signed with division rival Tampa Bay on Wednesday. Thursday's announcement means New Orleans has smoothly inserted another Pro Bowler to replace its lost 2-time Pro Bowler. In addition, the Saints have now saved $2 million per season with arguably no drop in talent.

"Our offensive line has been an integral part of our team's success on offense over the last six seasons," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement released by the franchise. "We're excited that Ben will be a New Orleans Saint and think he will prove to be an outstanding fit to our offensive line and our team both on and off the field. Ben comes to us from an offense in Baltimore that experienced a lot of success, both running the football and in pass protection. He was a big part of that and we believe that he can come right in and fit into our program without missing a beat."

Grubbs, 28, was a 5-year starter for Baltimore after being a first round pick out of Auburn. He missed six games last year with a toe injury - the only games of his career he has missed - but then returned and was named to the Pro Bowl as the Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship game. In 2009 and 2010, Grubbs was a Pro Bowl alternate for the AFC.

Can someone recollect my refreshment?  Wasn't Grubbs originally recruited to AU as a tight end?

Not sure if we recruited him as a TE, but his wikipedia page says:

Quote
Grubbs was born in Eclectic, Alabama and attended Elmore County High School where he was a standout on the gridiron as the team's star linebacker. Grubbs registered 150 tackles, six sacks, and an interception as a senior. A two-way star, Grubbs also played fullback, rushing for 130 yards on 28 carries, with two touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 50 yards. As a junior, Ben managed 110 total tackles, and an interception. Grubbs also lettered as a four-year starter on the basketball team.

As a senior, he was rated one of the top 10 players in Alabama by SuperPrep Magazine. Grubbs was a SuperPrep All-American and an Alabama Sports Writer's Class 4A All-State selection as a linebacker. At 6-4, 250 as a high school senior, he was recruited as a defensive end, though.[1] Considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, Grubbs was listed as the No. 23 strongside defensive end prospect in the nation.[2] He verbally committed to Auburn on January 23, 2002, picking the Tigers over LSU and Alabama.

Heath Evans' New Orleans Saints charity softball game scheduled for May 16

Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

Although former New Orleans Saints fullback Heath Evans' playing days are over, his popular annual charity softball game will continue. The third annual Heath Evans Softball Showdown will pit members of the Saints offense vs. the defense on Wednesday, May 16 at Zephyr Field.

More than 30 current Saints players are expected to participate in the game, which has been a star-studded event the past two years. Quarterback Drew Brees stole the show in each of the first two years, winning the pre-game Home Run Derby both times.

Tickets are $12 each and available at the Zephyr Field box office or on Ticketmaster.com. Proceeds from the game and a raffle will benefit the Heath Evans Foundation, which is dedicated to fostering hope and healing in the lives of children and families affected by sexual abuse.

"Last year's softball game was a huge success thanks to the fans and the Saints players," Evans said in a press release. "Everyone had a lot of fun and this year's game will be even better with some surprises we have planned. It's family-friendly for the fans and we're raising money for a good cause, helping victims of childhood sexual abuse. This is a cause that my wife and I strongly believe in and are passionate about. I really appreciate the fans and my former teammates rallying to help us this epidemic."

Will Herring, or recently former players Heath Evans & Montez Billings apparently didn't help.

DE according to rivals.  You're probably thinking of what's his name, the NT for the Cowboys.  However, in looking at wiki, it says he played LB and FB in HS, and came to Auburn as an undersized DE, or over sized LB at 250lbs.  They thought about making him a DT, then he moved to TE and played there in 2003.  Moved to G in the following offseason.  So, maybe that's what you're thinking about.

Hate the Saints all the way back to Archie Manning.

The ONLY time I liked them even a little was when Swilling was playing LB there.  Then it was only tolerate, not like.

Saints are nothing but the worst of LSU and Bama fans mixed together to make ugly colored uniforms.

I might like them better if they'd give up the colors and switch to a Mardi Gras theme.  Purple, gold and green.

But I'm never going to like the Saints.  If Cam was QB, Bo was in the backfield, Dye was head coach, Hall was DC, Greg Carr, Tracy Rocker, Dave Beck, Ken Bernich, David King and Carlos Rogers were on D, and maybe Courtney and Terry Beasley and Lawyer Tillman were receivers..... I might not loathe them.

Speaking of... Some fuckwad named Ian Berg who "writes" for Bleacher Report listed the greatest Auburn defensive  players of all time in one of his (incredibly shitty) pieces.  He left Ken Bernich off the list.  When asked, he said "I've never heard of him..."   Seriously?  Well what the fucking fuck are you doing writing anything then?

Ken Bernich was a defensive bad ass.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

From Gretna.  Even Bad Ass Ken didn't claim NOLA.

There was a picture of him in old game programs with his nose gashed open from his helmet, I guess, blood streaming down his face and he was still ready to hit somebody.

I remember that very same picture.  Bernich was always the epitome of bad ass to me.  Long before my time was Zeke Smith.  I know he was an All-American and his pic just made him look like he would rip your head off.
