Arkansas State defensive coordinator Keith Patterson resigns after less than 2 months on job

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Keith Patterson arrived in Birmingham after the New Year as the interim coach at Pittsburgh. He left the Magic City as the new defensive coordinator at Arkansas State after coaching in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

It seemed a good match for Patterson, as well as a reunion with Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn. The two worked as coordinators together at Tulsa and remained friends.

The reunion in Jonesboro, alas, didn't last long. Malzahn announced Patterson's resignation Friday, a stunning development to say the least.

According to news reports, Patterson will seek a job with another Division I-A program for the 2012 season.

In fact, that job is likely at West Virginia, according to reports out of that state.
