The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a five-year deal to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano as their new head coach.

The 45-year-old former Scarlet Knights coach was hired Thursday, more than three weeks after the Bucs fired Raheem Morris following a 4-12 record.

"We are thrilled to introduce Coach Schiano as the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "During our thorough search, we met with numerous impressive candidates, but Coach Schiano surely distinguished himself. From his leadership skills to his impressive track record, he is, simply put, the right man for the job."

At Rutgers, athletic director Tim Pernetti has appointed offensive line coach Kyle Flood as the school's interim head coach.

The Buccaneers said Schiano would be formally introduced a news conference Friday.

"Coach Schiano is a bright, meticulous teacher who knows how to get the most out of his players," said Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in the statement. "He built and ran a pro-style program at Rutgers, and he's a defensive-minded coach whose teams have always been characterized by toughness and a physical style of play."

Schiano was intrigued by the challenge of coaching in the NFL and also was concerned about the perceived uncertainty of the future direction of the Big East Conference, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

The two sides met Wednesday for the second time and then spent some of the night into Thursday morning working out the contract.

Mike Sherman, the other candidate to get a second interview with the Bucs, is in Miami this morning visiting with the Dolphins about their offensive coordinator job, according to a source.

Schiano has previous NFL experience as an assistant coach with Chicago from 1996-98.

He played linebacker at Bucknell but never in the NFL. His first big break in coaching came at Penn State, where Joe Paterno hired him to coach defensive backs in 1991. He was at Penn State through 1995, before being hired by the Bears.

Because of his success at Rutgers, there had often been speculation for years about Schiano possibly replacing Paterno when the Hall of Famer was done coaching. But when Penn State was looking for a replacement after firing Paterno amid a child sex-abuse scandal involving former longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, the school hired Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

Schiano has been courted by several other colleges during his time at Rutgers, most notably Miami and Michigan.

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who played for Schiano at Rutgers, was among former Scartlet Knights players to talk about the news on Twitter.

"Congrats to coach @GregSchiano the Bucs are getting a great man and a great coach. #salute," he wrote. Rice is scheduled to be a free agent but has said he expects to be back with the Ravens.

Eric LeGrand, who suffered a spinal injury in 2010 but has continued to be a constant around the Rutgers program, tweeted his surprise at the news.

"Really? Not going to lie I am a little bit shocked right now," he wrote.

New England Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty, who also played for Schiano at Rutgers, said Thursday he thinks his former coach will do a great job in the NFL.

"He's a great coach, so I'm not surprised that he was offered the opportunity," McCourty said. "I think he'll do a great job."

I don't really know enough about him (other than what I read in the article) to have an opinion.  He doesn't have much NFL experience. 

(From Schianos POV) I think he wanted to get out of Rutgers, I think he had to be kicking himself over not parlaying his past success into a better job.  It won't hurt his resume either (if anything it probably helps even if he is unsuccessful), if he fails in the NFL chances are Colleges would still come calling. 

As I have said before NFL is a totally different beast, college coaches much better than him have failed miserably.  It takes a certain kind to be an NFL coach.  Time will tell

Is he a good football coach?  Clearly he is. 

Did he learn the differences in the college game and the pro game with his short time in Chicago?  You'd have to think he at least has an idea.  How will his personality mesh with the typical NFL player?

Will the front office help him or work against him on personnel issues?  How much of the decision making process is left to him?  This is a major question that plays a huge role in the NFL.   I have no idea what Tampa's current personnel situation is.

Most of the coaches that move from the college ranks to the NFL fail miserably. There are a few that have that personality and coaching style to make it though. Look at Harbough, he seems to have done pretty good his first year at the 49ers. I don't know but it seems to me that Schiano kind of reminds me of Harbough in a coaching sense. Saban didn't make it because he obviously doesn't have the control over his players that he likes to have. Spurrier I'm not sure about because I kind of thought he would be successful but I think that was more of owner micromanagement. You never know how coaches will take to the NFL game but it just seems to me that this is right down Schianos alley.

Jim Harbaugh isn't the typical college coach.  His dad was a coach.  His brother is an NFL coach, and Jim played a while in the NFL.  He knows the differences.

From what I have seen of Schiano, I would have to give him the nod on being successful in the NFL.

I think Barber is the only one left from the senior citizen group that was on D just a few years ago. I think Schiano is a good coach and is automatically worth 3 more wins than this past season; with the same players.

Kidding.  Gailey is just another in a long line of retreads that NFL owners seem to always be so in love with.  I really like hires like Harbaugh and Schiano.  Don't have a clue if he'll do anything but they're coming off 4-12.  How bad could he be?

Well, depending on how much freedom he'll have with player personnel, you can fuck up an NFL franchise for quite a while with bad drafts and trades. 

Think about it, you get, depending on how you've traded picks, roughly 7 rookies a year.  4 in the top 4 rounds.  4 players that are LIKELY to contribute, and 3 more that are probably back ups, specialists, projects, that maybe won't even make the roster.  It ain't college where you get 25 each year and hope 15-18 contribute.

Then maybe you pick up a FA or 2. 

The margin for error is much closer in the NFL when it comes to evaluating personnel.
