Lots you can eliminate by experience alone, and that goes for both ends of the spectrum.  We're not getting Kevin Gilbride for instance, nor would chiz hire Bobby Engram, fresh off his playing career.

Greg Roman seems to want to be back in College as a HC.  I know he was a finalist for the Penn State gig, but just discovered he was also trying to land the Vandy job last year too.  He's sort of no name in the NFL, though he's the OC, he's running Harbaugh's offense.  I'm pretty sure Harbaugh is the head play caller, or at least the head planner for the offense, but don't know that for sure.  Interestingly enough, Harbaugh has never been an OC at any level, at least not in name.  Maybe Roman thinks being the actual play caller will get him more name recognition and vault him in to a HC gig.

Or, maybe there's something that will surprise us all.

Discuss.

Three things:

1. You just did a lot of research.
2. Greg Roman (or any of the other candidates) fails to impress me.  Why wait for that guy?  What makes him or any of the others that special to wait until signing day?  Or was it lack of options?
3. I don't know of any OC out there that has as much "splash" as Malzahn did.  I can't think of any that would even be close unless it was something out of bizzarro land like John Gruden just wanting to get back around football.

Nah, I cut and pasted that shit off NFL.com team sites.  Didn't read most of it.  Just throwing out the possible names.  Why does the OC have to have "splash" to be a good OC?

He doesn't.

But college football success is contingent upon recruiting, and as of right now, besides blind hope, recruiting isn't going very well.

I guess I don't understanding the waiting game for a good OC.  Surely Chizik could have found a good OC before now.  Waiting for a great one that attracts immediate attention?  I could understand that.  I just don't know who that guy would be.

I'm not sure recruiting is or isn't going well.  As has been stated in the crootin' forum, when we finish with a shitty class on Feb. 1 I'll worry.  Gene has come through every time he was doubted.  Until he disappoints I will trust.

FWIW, Roman has been running, or at least been VERY involved in running Harbaugh's offense at both the college and pro level since 2009.  It's a pro style, run/play action offense which is what everybody seems to want here at Auburn.  It's also noted to very simple, which is key in being effective at the college level IMO.

Skreetz?  He does have a lot of varied college and NFL experience.  Has been an OC, and recruiting coordinator.

Yeah.

From piecing together rumors from all the sites and what some self pro-claimed insiders have said, I would imagine that Koetter was our first choice and he took a job with Fisher and the Rams so now we have to wait until a team is out of the playoffs for our second choice.  Ver Steeg seems like he would be a good hire.  I have heard rumors that if we don't land him that we will go after Scot Loeffler.  I don't think he would be a bad hire either.

I just hope that he can coach up our QB's.  It doesn't matter how many Diggs, Pattersons and Louis's we recruit if we don't have someone who can throw them the ball.

All true, but no amount of coaching is going to make Mosley an SEC QB, contrary to some opinions.  If we ever hire an OC that can make a player out of a non player, we better pay him whatever it takes to keep him, as he's one of a kind.

Koetter went to the Falcons, but no biggie.  I don't know who was/is first choice, but I fucking hope the current choice loses this weekend, and we can have a presser on Monday to get this shit on the road!

Agree with you on Moseley,  I do have faith in Fraizer that he has some talent to work with and I think Pike does as well.  I know we are recruiting a guy from Mississippi that is listed as an athlete on Rivals, but he has played QB for his HS.  I don't know anything about his skills or talent.

I reserve judgement on Frazier.  I think in fall camp, Trotter and Mosley got the bulk if the reps, and they predetermined that Frazier would be a role player, ie wildcat.   They didn't work him passing the ball beyond normal individual drill time.

Have to figure is he's not the guy this coming year, then he probably won't ever be.
