AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has emerged as one of the leading candidates to become the head coach at Kansas, according to someone familiar with the hiring process.Kansas and Malzahn have discussed the job. The Jayhawks need a head coach after firing Turner Gill on Nov. 27.Auburn is already looking for a defensive coordinator after Ted Roof left to take a similar job at Central Florida on Wednesday.KU.sports.com reported Kansas has also talked to Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst about the job.Malzahn has served as Auburn's offensive coordinator the last three seasons, including last year when he and quarterback Cam Newton helped direct the Tigers' to record-setting performances and the national championshipAuburn's offensive numbers fell dramatically this season as Malzahn and Auburn dealt with a wave of inexperienced players. Malzahn was the highest paid assistant in the nation at $1.3 million this seasonMalzahn came to Auburn after being Tulsa's offensive coordinator for two years.
