Boss

Starz keeps swinging for relevance with the original programming and they've hit a pretty solid one with Boss.  Spartacus was campy high gore and preening, really just a vehicle to get lots of people naked.  It grew on me.

Boss, however is much more cerebral.

Frasier Crane reinvents himself as the mayor of Chicago.  The embattled mayor to be specific.  It's a little over the top and but the story of political maneuverings set against a backdrop of family maneuverings is pretty taughtly told.

Watching people struggle with loyalty and betrayal, including Frasier (err.... Tom Kane) makes an interesting mix.   This week's set of dual betrayals was pretty grim and it was almost disappointing to see the characters make the choices they made in their own selfish interests.

The characters are pretty well fleshed out and their motivations and behaviors make sense.

The debut show started with Frasier Tom being told he has an incurable and rapidly advancing degenerative mental condition.   Frankly, I think the show would have been even better without that unnecessary sideline, but it's there and has to be dealt with.

If you haven't watched Boss, you need to start from the beginning somehow.  Only one or two episodes remain in this season.

Watch because there's this and it's on Starz if for no other reason:
