Our offense has been putrid
Most inept offense I've seen in my life. Far worse than 2008 in my opinion. It went to hell in a handbasket at halftime of the Clemson game and never recovered. I will never understand that. To that point, AU moved the ball with relative ease. Even against SC the offense moved the ball. Didn't take advantage of the movement sometimes, but it moved.
Since it was the worst offense I've ever seen and it combined with what was statistically one of the most pitiful Auburn defenses in history, I'd have to rank this team as easily one of the worst (record be damned) I've seen in my 40+ years.
As I've said before this wasn't a team that was a break here or there from a better season. This was a team that without a few breaks could very easily have gone 3-9 or 4-8.
Quarterback play was the worst I've ever witnessed on any team. Well, there was that one time I saw a 2A team that had 13 players and their QB got hurt. They put in the fullback. He might have been worse but I'm not sure.
The WR corps, a strength for two seasons, didn't exist all year. Did AU complete a single pass other than some swing bullshit?
Lutz and Dyer were misused.
The defense was constantly out of position. Constantly whiffing and missing. Fundamentally unsound.
But AU did kick the fuck out of the ball, didn't they? At least that was good. Did you notice that the kickoff and punt coverage teams consistently took the right angles, wrapped up and put people on the ground? If they can be coached to do it properly... well....
I can't remember EVER being apathetic because I knew without any question that shit was going to get pushed in. Can't remember ever thinking (except for one game in 2008) that AU had absolutely no chance. Not during the Barfield days, not during the last days of Bowden, never. I always thought we had it in us. Not this year.
And therefore.... yes. This team, despite the record, sits near the top of my futility chart.
