When they are words you added to your phone's dictionary, they can. I can't tell you how many times my wife has almost texted something vulgar to her mother because she misspells a word and it defaults to something it shouldn't.

My phone annoyingly autocorrects te or teh, not to "the", but to TE, assumingly due to some fantasy shit-talking incidents.
