Ndamukong Suh suspended two games for Thanksgiving stomp
By Chris Chase

Ndamukong Suh(notes), the Detroit Lions defensive leader who was ejected from the team's Thanksgiving game for stomping on the shoulder of a defenseless opponent, was suspended for two games without pay by the NFL on Tuesday.

Should he begin serving the suspension immediately, Suh would miss a road game against the New Orleans Saints and a home game versus the Minnesota Vikings. Jay Glazer reports Suh will not have to attend anger management courses as part of the suspension. He is expected to be fined an additional $50,000 by the Lions for being ejected from a game.

As Yahoo! Sports' Dan Wetzel notes, Suh's absence shouldn't have too much effect on the team's playoff chances should he choose to begin serving the suspension this week. The first game against the Saints was already penciled in as a loss, with or without Suh. The Vikings game should be an easy win even if Suh isn't on the field. It's the Dec. 18 game in Oakland, the Christmas Eve game against the Chargers and the Week 17 game against a Packers team that may be playing for an undefeated season or could be resting starters for the playoffs that will decide Detroit's playoff chances. That's when the team needs him on the field.

The two-game suspension fits in line with expectations and is the proper ban for Suh's dirty maneuvers. Pushing the helmet and stepping on the arm of Evan Dietrich-Smith(notes) wasn't as egregious as Albert Haynesworth(notes) stepping on the head of Andre Gurode(notes), a move which earned Haynesworth a five-game suspension in 2006. But given Suh's past fines ($42,500 in his young career) and lawless on-field attitude, it sends the proper message.

Much was made of Suh's comments after the game in which he claimed he was misunderstood, his subsequent retreat from that stance and the call he made three days after the incident to Roger Goodell. I doubt they played as much a role in the suspension as some believe. This isn't the NBA, where contrition can lead to leniency and defiance to long suspensions (right, Gilbert Arenas?). Goodell sanctions players, coaches and owners for the deeds they do, not what they say about them. Suh deserved his two games and should be thankful its all he got.

Didn't realize until recently how dirty that fucker is.  And from what I hear, it's night and day compared to his off the field demeanor.

Yeah, I know, its like the guy has a split personality. He is one nasty DL fo sho. It was pretty stupid, though, for him to kick a player like that. Hell, that was after he banged his head onto the surface a couple of times. I surprised that the NFL or the Lions are not requiring him to seek anger management.

Tony Dungy was on Mike and Mike this morning.  He said that Mean Joe Green was the same way when he came into the league.  He said it took some older players telling him that he was hurting the team to get him in line.  Problem is there are no older players on the Lions that a young kid would respect.

Can't agree with you on this.  The shit I saw flagged last night, I'd make the same argument you're making.  Suh's bullshit antics?  No way.

I don't disagree with punishment. He got a PF. He got ejected. Even suspend him some.

But 2 games when they are coming down the back part of the schedule vying for playoff spots? This was punitive and sent a message. Suh is an example.

He should be.  Until idiots like him get shit from their team for hurting the team, they don't learn.  His teammates will let him know they don't appreciate him hurting the team's playoff chances.

I think a two game suspension was just about right. Which is rare for the NFL to not over or under react.

What he did was fucked up and clearly against any semblance of "good sportsmanship".

That being said, he didn't kill anybody. Life goes on.

The punishment fits the crime in my opinion.

I would have hit him more in the wallet and less in suspension. Dock him 4 games worth of pay and make him play for free. Make the penalty more severe money wise every additional time he does it. He will learn quickly at that rate. I just dont like the 2 game suspension because it could affect a playoff race. It penalizes the entire team. Money is a way to penalize just him.

With the other players in the NFL that have been suspended for lesser things, they had to suspend him and I don't disagree with it. To be honest, I thought it would be 3 maybe even 4 games mainly because I don't think this is his first go with fines and such as stated in the article. Personally I like his mean streak and wish someone like him could be Auburns DC.

Yes he is an example.  Hopefully the others learn from it.  Plus it is not unprecedented.  Albert Haynesworth got 5 games for stomping on the Cowboy's center.  Of course if I remember correctly the player he stomped on ended up having to get stitches.

Have to agree with this somewhat.  It's football, you are knocking the shit out of each other, it gets rough and emotions get out of control.  1 game suspension and a shitload of money.  Hit them in the pocketbook hard enough and they will learn real quick.

Oh side note.  Read an article on Urlacher several years ago and one teammate said he is the nicest guy he has ever seen.  Goes down to the local home for mentally handicapped and gives out free tickets and pays for things they need.  Gave some random people walking down the street some tickets.  Stops and talks to people.  Gives them autographs and hugs.   Once he got in the locker room and put his pads on, he was the meanest SOB he had ever seen walk the face of the earth and was all business.

Thats the thing, he has already been hit in the pocket book and this happened. Again, I like the guy and his mean streak, thats how DL's should be but kicking a player after the play is dead is a bit over the top. As far as the game goes, I agree with the sentiment that some of these rules are over the top.
