Best/Worst Iron Bowl Memories
« on: November 22, 2011, 03:13:32 PM »
This gets discussed to a certain extent every year, but after last year...there may be some new ones.  Last years Iron Bowl actually encompassed some of the best and worst times, in the span of a few short hours.  I didn't go to BDS but we had a ton of people over.  I've never gone into that game being more pumped with what was on the line.  I don't think I've ever had my hopes shoved up my rectum worse than they were the first quarter and a half of that game.  Don't know that I've ever stood there in disbelief like I did by the end of that game.

2009 was obviously a loss but I honestly thionk that's as much fun as I've had in the stands during an Iron Bowl.  The X-Gate got the prep going, but it seemed like every single person around us in the stadium was there to have a damn good time.  Even the Bama couple in front of us was cool as hell.  Everyone had teh burrbinz and was more than willing to share.  I think it may also have been the fact that we went in there with zero expectations and the way the game played out just made it that much better.

I guess that means I'll have a killer time this Saturday because my expectations are -217.

2008 was a low. Worst loss I had seen to Bama in my time on Earth.

As was the game in 2001 (I think), where we were heavily favored at home. Franchione unleashed Beard and Zow to raise hell on us and they did. I believe it was 31-7 or something of the like.

1989 was special. Will always be the best to ME. I know 1972 is like that for the guys that are 10-15 years older than me.

1993 was uber cool. Was about 10 rows above the Sanders play from Nix in that corner. Pure awesomeness.

1986 will always be a favorite simply because of the Tillman reverse. Its one of my first great Iron Bowl memories. Bo Over the Top was great too but I barely remember it seeing as how I was like 5 or 6.

Worst was 1996, and Dennis Fucking Riddle scoring with about a minute left to take a one point lead.  My last game I went to as an Auburn student.

Best.  1993 was special, my first Iron Bowl win as a student, 11-0 season.  "We don't have an AttitUde.  We're just 11-0, and you're not."

1997 - Thinking we're done, and then the fumble and the kick.

2000 - First time back in Bryant-Denny.  Never have I been so cold and wet at a game, and loved every second of it.  The sign on the Supper Club, as we pulled back into town, "Shut Down.  Shut Out.  Shut Up."

2003 - When Caddy took off, that's the loudest I've ever heard Jordan-Hare

2005 - Special for a number of reasons.  My daughter was about 7 months old, and we took her.  I was holding her, and we build a 21-0 lead, my wife took over, and Bama started scoring, so I took the baby back.

2001 is a funny and bad memory all at the same time.  The bitch slapping they put on us that day hurt.  Funny part is my brother got so drunk, he passed out in the stands, and me and his friend had to basically hold him up the entire game.  Since there wasn't much standing that day it wasn't that hard.  He always smiles about it and says "I'm glad I have no memory of that game".

One of the last IB's in Legion field I think.  1991 or 92, can't recall.  Maybe a handful more played there.  Was dating my wife to be at the time.  The only Auburn girl in her entire bammer family.  Went to Auburn just to spite them and her asswipe twin brother.  Sitting in the stand before the game and this little idiot bammer kid about 10 years old is hangin over the rail of the upper deck yelling down at all the Auburn crowd "Rawwwl Taaaahgd"...entire section of Auburn people start chanting "jump, jump, jump".

The "Edward Scissumhands" game was good too, watched from our first set of season tix seats up in the nosebleeds.   Wifey preggo about 8 months along made that trip up their long.

2000, went to Turdville, sat with Ben Tamburello in the corner of the endzone in that freezing ass rain to see a 9-0 Auburn win.

I think my fave though, was 2004 in Turdville.  In many ways, it was much like 2010, though we weren't so far behind as to not have any hope.  Jason Campbell was cool as the other side of the pillow in the second half.

The 89' was definitely THE loudest game I've ever been to.  We never stopped yelling at the top of our lungs.  It could be Bama's ball on their own 32 with a 2nd down and 8 midway through the 2nd quarter.  Nothing happening and you literally couldn't hear yourself think.

The Van Tiffin kick was the one that ripped my heart out, threw that sucker on the ground and stomped that bitch flat.  Walked out of Lesion Field one whipped puppy.

1982 is and always will be the best ever.

It was the Berlin wall coming down.  It was Truman dropping the nukes. It was Reagan being elected president.

It was the dam breaking, a complete and total paradigm shift.   It was everything we dreamed of for nearly a decade and more.  It was forever.

This fluctuates:

Best:

2003 was my first Iron Bowl experience.  I had gone to every game my freshman year at Auburn, but when Alabama came to town, it was an obvious change in the atmosphere.  More people.  More intensity.  An entire different feel to the week.

And it was only Tuesday.

And then Cadillac went 80 yards on the opening play.

2007 was also wonderful but not as meaningful.  It was Saban's first year at Alabama.  At the time, I was aspiring to be a college football coach, and since I am vertically challenged, I wanted to compare my height to the "midget."  I walked away from my Tiger Host spot into the Alabama sideline and walked right up to him during Alabama warm ups.  He looked at me like I was about to attack him, but I scurried away before anyone beat the shit out of me for getting too close to the Fuhrer.

And then before the opening kickoff, DJ Hall walked to the back of the endzone right up to me and this other guy and said, "Y'all bout to get the fuck beat outchyou."

And then we won.

Worst:

2008 obviously, but maybe that isn't really the worst.  We were horrible that year.

2009 may have hurt the worst.  Being THAT close to knocking them off their high horse only to lose at home in the final minutes?  That may have been the most heartbreaking loss I've experienced as an Auburn fan.

2008 & 2010.

Worst & Best.

2005 was pretty fun. But it's no 2010.

2005 was by far the most fun.  It was a party from kickoff until the end of the 4th quarter.

Sticking with ones I attended in person.

1999 Iron Bowl was worst that I thought was going to be my best.  Tubs first season, we had nothing and Bama had Alexander and Samuels.  I remember Bama on about the 2 yard line heading in to the student section and we stonewalled them for 4 plays (Best).  Here comes the offense and Tubs elects to throw from the endzone with Leard on the first play.  Sack, safety, kickoff, drive down the field, score.  We lost by 11 and the first time Bama won in Auburn.

1997 was best with the Scissum fumble.  Might have been a terrible game in retrospect as that is the only play I remember from it.  I was on the field security for the 4th quarter (watched first half from press box, that was a treat for a student) standing on the end of the field where the fumble and field goal happened.  Saw myself and one of the other security guys jumping up and down together on ESPN that night.  Got to call first aid for a Alabama fan who was so drunk he couldn't get up to the exit by himself and was so fat that his buddies couldn't get him out; that added to it.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

two best:
1971-although we lost 31-7. Got to meet Shug, Sullivan and Beasley and two Auburn players that came to our home the night before the game. Was an Auburn fan already but that made it permanent.
1982-K. is dead on with that. No more stranglehold.

worst:
1985 Van Tiffin's 52 yard FG...still bothers me.

This is the first Alabama-Auburn game I will not be attending since I missed the 1996 game.  My streak of 14 consecutive games in the series comes to a death.  Too much studying to do before exams for me to make it this year.  So, for that reason alone, 2011 has a mild feel to it already.

Worst?  1997 was bad.  2010 was uber bad.  There's just something about 2002, though.  Alabama was a Top 10 team and Auburn was a team crippled by injury.  Franchione was preoccupied with getting out of town before probation set in, and 'Bama lost 17-7.  I fully expected to beat you last year, but I recognized that AU could very easily win.  I didn't see that L coming in 2002.

Best?  The 2008 game is up there because jaws still have to be rattling from that beatdown.  2001 gets my vote, though.  We pulled out the win as a road underdog and did so convincingly, 31-7.  If Auburn had fielded a little better team in 2009, that game could move to my #1 slot.

The 2000 game was my last as an Auburn Student.  I remember it being sleet and rain miserable.
The 1997 Game was my first at Auburn, It was special.
2002 they forgot about TE Robert Johnson for 2 td's and there was a white tailback that ran it up the gut.
The Honk if you sacked Brodie Game was a classic too.
Last year's game brought me from the edge of death to pure elation.

The 2011 Game when we had no game plan and only used Michael Dyer 3 times in the first half.  If I remember correctly we only had like 40 yards in the 3rd Quarter.  We scored no offensive points.  Final score was 42-14.  That game sucked...anyone else remember that game?

It's Godfather III, Caddyshack 2, Christmas Vacation 2.  I've heard of it, but don't think it actually exists.  It's like the Yeti.  Just a rumor.  Didn't happen.
