Rich Rod. Good hire IMHO. His style should fit in better out there than it did in Meat Chicken.

Quote
Arizona has hired former West Virginia and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez as its next football coach, as athletic director Greg Byrne made the news official with a photo posted on Twitter.

Posted to Byrne's Twitter page on Monday was an entry that read "And the new Arizona football coach and his family is......."

Miller: Arizona Makes Right Choice

In hiring Rich Rodriguez before the end of the season, Arizona made the right choice at the right time, writes Ted Miller. Blog

Byrne will officially introduce Rodriguez at a news conference Tuesday at the McKale Center, the school said. He replaces interim coach Tim Kish.

Arizona (3-8, 2-7 Pac-12) fired Mike Stoops last month after struggling to a 1-5 start.

Rodriguez coached Michigan from 2008-2010 and West Virginia from 2001-2007. Rodriguez posted a 60-26 record at West Virginia, finishing first in the Big East four times.

Rodriguez was 15-22 at Michigan, including 6-18 in Big Ten play, before being dismissed.

During Rodriguez's tenure, the school acknowledged that it was guilty of four NCAA violations. It was put on three years of probation, though Rodriguez and the school avoided major penalties in part because the NCAA agreed that the coach didn't fail to promote an atmosphere and compliance in his program.

Rodriguez has been working as an analyst for CBS Sports this year, but had made it clear he wanted to get back into coaching as soon as possible.

Byrne fired Stoops on Oct. 10, two days after the Wildcats lost to Oregon State. The team was 1-5 at the time, with the only victory over FCS member Northern Arizona, and 10 straight losses to FBS schools.

Stoops' contract ran through 2013 under an extension granted in 2008, and Byrne has said the buyout for the remainder of it will be about $1.4 million.

Stoops was 27-38 in conference games.

Kish, the team's defensive coordinator, took over as interim coach and the team won two Pac-12 games, over UCLA and last Saturday 31-27 over rival Arizona State. The Wildcats conclude their season Saturday at home against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Information from ESPN college football reporter Joe Schad and The Associated Press was used in this report.

More importantly can we get Stoops as DC?

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Your suggestion will be taken under advisement.

I think that is a huge hire.

Pac 12 doesn't play great defense.  He'll put in a style similar to Oregon (not as fast paced).

If he gets a few good athletes on offense, Arizona may make some noise over the next few years.

His style will "fit" because AZ football people won't care what offense he runs if he wins.  There is no such thing as "Traditional Smashmouth Arizona Football".

Rich Rod is a good coach.  I also admire him for the fact that he's been a guest on Finebaum this year despite Finebaum talking total shit about his wife, and has been nothing but class when he could have, and maybe should have, told Finebaum to choke on a bag of dicks, and has even turned Finebaum in to an admirer.

Serious question about Stoops.  What has he done that makes him a defensive guru?  Is it his time in Oklahoma? Is the fact that he is fired up on the sidelines? I seriously don't know anything about him. I would say that is Bob's D and not Mikes and his D hasn't been really good since he got to AZ.   I thought it was K-State or something, but that was Leavitt's D.

Maybe I am not looking hard enough, and maybe it's the we have a former head coach right now that isn't giving me a warm fuzzy.   If we just want someone who knows his shit, is mean as hell and we are going after a former head coach, I am calling San Fransisco and getting Jim Leavitt to head up my D.

Agree. I think RichRod has gotten an unfair perception perpetuated by the media (we all know how that works). Guy is a damn fine coach and the west coast style blue chip players out there will love to come play for him in that Offense. He is as exciting as Chip Kelly but less of an ass.

If anything, it was Michigan's fault for trying to fit a square peg in a round hole by hiring him.

But they do have a history of run-and-shoot in Tucson

Think they will want to check his immigration papers when he gets there?
