Tiger Talk Question
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:26:51 AM »
I admit, I haven't listened to a show this year.  Just haven't thought about it.  Last year, I couldn't wait, for obvious reasons.  However; a caller to a certain afternoon talk show that I don't listen to and shall remain nameless, complained that the show had gone from the open forum held in a restaurant, Conference Center etc. to the studio.  Plus, they don't take calls and only respond to emails.  True or not?  If so....why?

I was wondering the same thing.

Would be disheartening if true.

Very true.

All questions vetted in advance.  No surprises.  No call ins.  Just Rob and Gene chatting.

Sucks beyond words.  Listened once haven't since.

Also gone is the post-game wrap up show.  It's now a 15 minute deal available only online.  I used to greatly anticipate watching Shug and later Dye sit there in the studio and talk about the game clips.  Fuck, I even liked Bryant's damn show.

It made those guys human.  I felt connected to them.

Then again, Shug and Dye (and even Tuberville) would take a call, would send along an autograph. Things are different now.

I was six years old when Auburn took hold in my heart.  I sent a letter to Shug after a particularly heartbreaking loss to LSU in Baton Rouge.  I got a letter back from him.  Hand written.  He sent me a couple of things, one of which was an autographed picture.  I'm sitting at my desk looking at that 40-year old picture at this moment.  It's been on the wall wherever I've lived ever since.

I know George Wallace has a bad rap, but he was a people guy, too.  My grandmother told me that if GCW was running for office, even if he was dead, I was to vote for him.  In 1982, his last campaign for governor, I had an opportunity not to just vote for the guy but be a part of that campaign.  I worked as one of his youth chairmen in a small county.  He took me with him when he came through on the campaign tour.  I got to ride in the limo with him between stops.  Shell of a man, but my god when he got out of the car and up on the stage he came alive.  Couple of weeks after that I got a handwritten letter from George and an autographed photo.  It too is a staple of my office.  George is looking at me as I write this.

All that to say this:  Not a fan of the sanitized, behind the ropes, say nothing, keep your distance Gene.   Even Saban, who's famous for being a complete ass and has alienated many of the old guard in the program with his closed door policies, is more available than Gene.

Case in point:  In putting on the golf tournament I had to fill out forms in triplicate, jump through a number of hoops and wait on a response from Auburn.  They finally came back and said I could have one (1) autographed ball if I would send them the ball and wait six to eight weeks.  I got this notification nearly a month AFTER the tournament had taken place.  The UA athletic Department?  Made a call, talked to somebody they asked for info about the tourney.  I faxed it to them and in less than two weeks I had a couple of balls, some photos and a ton of stuff. Not just from Saban but from players too.  It made me sick.   The other guys had no trouble getting stuff from MSU, South Alabama, Southern Miss or LSU either.  Only Auburn.

It's Chizik's prerogative to set up the Tiger Talk show how he wants.  However, I think it's a really bad call to change it midseason after the season hasn't gone the way you want it too.  Looks petty even if he had a good reason to that wasn't disclosed to the listeners.

Are you sure about that?  I'm pretty sure I heard one earlier this year that was in the restaurant setting.

I could be wrong though.

I remember an uproar prior to the season.  This is what the ISP site says:

George Wallace had a photographic memory for names and faces.  He met my dad once when he (my dad) first started working for the AL Dept of Public Safety, and then remembered Dad's name and his old position at ADPS when Wallace saw him again in the state office building again three years later.

Really good thing for a politician to have.

So are working legs.

Sign coming from Columbus Ga into Alabama.

George Wallace stands up for Alabama. I thought it was a little ironic.

Anyone recall a guy who ran for Gubner several times, Charles Woods?  Military vet who got burnt to a crisp in an airplane.  Horrible looking.  Anyway, speaking of irony, part of his little campaign give aways...key chains...fans...included a hot pad.  Not joking, we had one.

Damn.

Well I guess it's not really that big of a deal.  I'd rather it be more fan friendly, but maybe (snicker snicker) Chizik wanted to have more time to watch (snicker) film for the upcoming game.

It's a different Auburn than what I grew up on.  The wall of separation, the corporate behavior is unfamiliar to me.  Been around this thing for years.  I could always pick up the phone and call somebody up there.  Now?  You get flunky A and Gofer B.  Not penetrating that inner sanctum.  Of course what I grew up on got monkey fucked by a cheating drunk, so.....

I remember him quite vividly; his ears were burned completely off his head. He just had 2 holes on the side of his bald head. Very creepy, indeed.

In school, we had a joke about him:

Q: How did Charles Woods cross the road?
A: Stapled to the chicken.

After hearing he was a war hero, I quit telling the joke.

I was making fun of him one time and my dad overheard it.  He chewed my ass out like any good ex old Drill Sergent would do and then he told me his story.  I have felt bad about it for years now.
