Though I'm only 29, I can say that he was my favorite boxer.

I grew up with my father telling me about his fights and other boxing matches when he was younger. So as I got older, I began watching Joe's old matches on ESPN Classic, and online.

It's a shame he died so quickly.

More like a blessing.  That's a tough way to go if it's protracted.

Eh, I didn't really mean it like that.

Just that they caught it so late, and by then, it was far too late to treat.

He's def one of my favorites right there with Joe Louis and Jimmy Braddock. Anyone who told Ali to shove it up his ass was ok in my book. I loathe Ali...

Watched the Joe Fraizer/Ali special on HBO.  I have watched several of his matches on ESPN Classic.  Damn that left hook was scary.

I know that Joe Fraizers son said that Ail had apologized to him for the way he talked about Joe, and Joe always wanted to know why Ail couldn't apologize to him directly.  I don't know for sure, but as of two years ago when HBO did the special Fraizer still hated Ali.

There was an interesting story from that documentary.  Apparently someone in Fraizers entourage had seats for the fight behind Ali's corner.  He said that Ali came back to the corner and asked Dundee to stop the fight b/c he didn't want anymore.  The guy heard it and started jumping up and down b/c he thought Fraizer was going to win and he looked over and could tell that Joe was about to quit as well.  It just so happened that Fraizers corner step out to the refs quicker than Ali's corner.   True or not, we will never know, b/c Ali would never admit to it.

Joe was good from what I have seen on old film, he would destroy most heavyweights of my time in watching the sport.

Can't say I disagree at all. I would say though, that I would have loved to see how Tyson would have done in the ring against these guys; Tyson in his prime that is.

Got his ass whipped by some and whip the ass of others.  Honestly Tyson never fought anyone worth a shit.  Tyson was a one style fighter.  Bulldog with his head down, little side to side movement other than his head and shoulders.  Which is ok against a Bonecrusher Smith, but against an Ali, Fraizer, or Young Foreman it gets you KTFO.   It doesn't work against a Buster Douglas, Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield either.

Not saying Tyson could win but all of those losses for Iron Mike came after his coach and mentor died. Tyson in his prime fighting one of the cats you've mentioned would have very entertaining; far more than any other than I can think at the present day.

Not taking anything away from Tyson.  He was bad, but his competition wasn't up to what Ali, Fraizer,  Foreman, Liston, Buster Mathis, Jimmy Ellis, Patterson, Norton, Leon Spinks.....etc....etc....etc...had to face.   Tyson in his prime kills today's heavyweight's.  The Kiltchsko's are dominating b/c there aren't any worthy opponents.  They would be lower tier of all that we have mentioned.

No doubt. Besides the occasional bout, most all of boxing sucks ass nowadays. This is one reason why the UFC has been so popular.

Gerry Cooney would whip both of them at the same time.  They'd struggle against Butterbean.

Tyson was like Larry Holmes though. If he hit you one good time, it was nite nite. 2 hardest punchers of all time most likely.

Haha!  You mentioned Cooney.

Growing up in my house we watched, USA Tuesday Night Fights, ESPN Wednesday and Friday Night Fights, HOB/Showtime or PPV boxing on Saturday and then ABC Wide World of Sports Boxing on Sundays.  We were freaks about it.  When I was a wee lad, my old man took me and my brother to see the Cooney and Spinks fight in 86/87/88 time frame.  It was closed circuit and they were showing it on big projection screens at the VBCC in Huntsville.   We walked in sat down and in round 5 Cooney was done.

I remember the pizza place we went to before the game J. Gregry's Pizzeria.  Good childhood memory.
