Quote
NEW ORLEANS -- Revelry turned into horror during New Orleans Halloween celebrations when gunfire erupted at four scenes leaving 15 people shot, two of whom died.

The first incident occurred just after midnight in the 400 block of Bourbon Street near the iconic Chris Owens nightclub when police believe two men began firing at one another, striking a total of eight people during the exchange.

As horrified people began running for cover, others in the massive crowd, oblivious to what was going on, surged to try to continue their party.

"We were all upstairs having a good time," said Rob Ratcher of North Carolina. "It sounded like firecrackers."

Police spokesman Officer Garry Flot said one of of those shot on Bourbon was killed.  That victim, a 25-year-old Albert Glover, died at a local hospital.  Another one of the victims was shot in the hip and the others suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Reporter Katie Moore on the scene at the time said police had the entire block shut down for several hours after the shooting.  Officers were not allowing foot traffic up Bourbon or on side streets.

Shortly before 2 a.m., police were also responding to another shooting near Canal and Burgundy streets where two men and two women were shot - one person in that group was killed as well.

Police arrested Baltiman Malcom, 24, moments after a fatal shooting that left a 19-year-old Joshua Lewis dead and 3 others injured, according to police.

"After a foot pursuit, Malcom and another suspect was detained. The third suspect managed to escape. Officers located a gun on the scene. Apparently an argument took place at which time the man was shot several times and died at the hospital," said a statement from the NOPD.

A man and two women suffered non-threatening injuries, according to police.

Malcom was booked with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to police.

Around 4 a.m., a third incident later left another person wounded near North Prieur and Spain streets.

Around 5:30 a.m., in a fourth shooting, two people were shot in the 1200 block of Louisa Street, near St. Claude Avenue.

Now it's a party.
It's like LSU fans are already conceding the loss to Bama.

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Yeah, was wondering if this would get national coverage.

People are highly pissed about this. It's getting to where people don't want to come to visit New Orleans, and tourism is the #1 industry here.

I still have family in New Orleans (River Ridge area and Pearl River, MS) and some in Donaldsonville.  My wife loves New Orleans.  I love New Orleans.

But you're absolutely right.  I have no desire to go visit.  I have no desire to go downtown.  To a Saints game.  To the Quarter.  To Bourbon Street.  To Mardi Gras.  To anything.

Because you're probably going to get shot or mugged.

Same thing in Birmingham.  Lakeview District?  Five Points?  Fuck that.  I've got other places to hang out.

I get what you're saying, but "probably"?

When you look at how many people are in the quarter on any given day, especially on an event like Halloween, you're probably statistically more likely to get shot to death in Omaha, Nebraska.

Did a lot of going out in Lakeview and Five Points in my days in Birmingham and never once felt threatened at all. Same here. Of course, I pretty much never go to the quarter, and I'd probably change my thoughts on it had I been at one of these shootings last night.

Nah just spread it out.

Five points is actually a lot better than it was. They have put in lots of street lighting so you can get a good look at who shoots you.

That's a shitty law.  How will you ever enforce it?  Don't blame the perp.
