On Turner Gill
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:49:03 AM »
It appears that he may be returning to Oz soon.  He's definitely not going to be in Kansas anymore, Toto.

At some point in the near future the chorus from the I knew we shouldn't have hired Turner Gill crowd will begin singing their revisionist songs.

I would like to take this early opportunity to say "Kansas isn't Auburn. You can't judge him based on what he did in that shithole."

Discussion of bovines and headwear may follow.

I was a Gill supporter.  He didn't just forget how to coach.  Being in a shitty situation accounts for some. A similar thing happened to someone at ISU.  All that being said we hired the right guy at the right time.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Reasoning here wasn't so prevalent when Chiz was hired, but should have applied.

What do they expect at Kansas? They do not invest in football there they way they do in basketball. I would imagine that's a hard place to recruit to. Did he change offenses? What's the reason for his failures there so far?

I was never on the Gill bandwagon.  I really wasn't that impressed with him at Buffalo to be honest.
My man for the job was Brian Kelley, and he has done nothing to change my mind about him since going to Notre Dame what the fuck was I thinking?

True, but Mark Mangino had KU winning 9-10 games a year just 2 years before.

Same cant be said for Iowa State. When is the last time they put together back to back 9 win seasons?

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I think Kelly actually has done a great job. He is changing the culture at ND. If you go back and watch some Weis games at ND, you can see a difference. They were soft and uninspired. Kelly is getting them there, slowly but surely. Plus, their schedule wasn't too friendly this year either. I like how when they play subpar, he chews their asses.

Gill might actually be too much of a nice guy.

Yes. He is blaming the players for losses, acting like a Sabanhole on the sidelines, and putting support staff in peril. He's changing that culture alright.

He has done some of that, but it's not nearly as bad as the 24/7 news cycle makes it out to be. I had heard for 24 hours about how he talked about how good his recruits were and that he threw Weis' recruits under the bus. I was a little appalled. Then I actually saw his quote - holy shit. Overblown a bit? Yes. So I am going to reach here and guess that you work in sports media of some sort since you are buying that.

Just to clarify, what is Saban's record at Bama? Is he an ass? Yes, I hate the guy personally.  But some programs need that. There is no doubt they can both coach. How did a nice guy like Shula turn out? Bama and ND both needed a kick in the ass. Nice guy softies don't do well in today's football world at any level.
