In his starts during the 2006 season, Mustain, along with future NFL running backs Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis, led Arkansas to an 8-0 record and completed 52.3 percent of his passes for 894 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
After his year at Arkansas, Mustain transferred to USC, where he battled for snaps with Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and Aaron Corp. Mustain never emerged as a starter with the Trojans, and completed 62.5 percent (52-of-89) of his passes for 505 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in limited action.
This past April, Mustain went undrafted in the NFL Draft and signed a free agent contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. He was released in June.
