Jefferson County to offer portable toilets for people caught in long lines for car tags

By Barnett Wright -- The Birmingham News The Birmingham News

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Jefferson County officials are making plans to place two portable toilets in Linn Park for residents who are waiting in line to pay car tags and do other business with the county's revenue department, commissioners said today.

Commissioner Joe Knight said he heard concerns from residents that their wait in lines -- which last up to five hours -- were an inconvenience for a number of reasons including for those who had to use the restroom and were afraid to lose their place in line.

Jeff Smith, director of the county general services department, said he would begin steps to acquire the portable toilets for placement in Linn Park, where lines of customers have been standing over the past two weeks.

Also, Knight, in another matter, held up a sign with a 1-800 number for residents to call when in need of assistance from county officials. Jokingly, the number was supposed to be 1-800 See Tony. But it turned out to be the number for a porn site, instead of the new Jefferson County manager, Tony Petelos.  #winning

Alabama's new immigration law requires proof of legal presence in the country to get an Alabama driver's license and to buy or renew a car tag. That requirement has helped create the lines for car tags in Jefferson County. The state has created a computerized system called ALVerify as a way for residents to avoid going to a county courthouse or license office to get a car tag and still prove they are in the country legally.

However, Jefferson County needs at least several days before it is able to offer it.

So let me get this straight.  In lieu of recognizing the problem of long lines because of the current bureaucracy we are going to further stick it to the folks who are already having to deal with the governments ineptitude?

nice.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

As a wise man once said, "the government solution to a problem is usually just as bad as the original problem."  Often times, it's worse...
